About this audiobook
One of the greatest and most ambitious works in English literature, in the original Middle English. The Canterbury Tales (Middle English: Tales of Caunterbury) is a collection of over 20 stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century, during the time of the Hundred Years' War. The tales (mostly written in verse, although some are in prose) are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.
Geoffrey Chaucer
Often referred to as the father of English poetry, Geoffrey Chaucer was a fourteenth-century philosopher, alchemist, astrologer, bureaucrat, diplomat, and author of many significant poems. Chaucer’s writing was influential in English literary tradition, as it introduced new rhyming schemes and helped develop the vernacular tradition—the use of everyday English—rather than the literary French and Latin, which were common in written works of the time. Chaucer’s best-known—and most imitated—works include The Canterbury Tales, Troilus and Criseyde, The Book of the Duchess, and The House of Fame.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some reviewers praise the excellent narration and useful information provided in the audiobook. They recommend it for its enjoyable stories and valuable lessons. However, there are negative reviews about the poor quality recording, mispronunciation of words, and uninspired reading. Despite the mixed reviews, the book is described as a classic of literature that everyone should read, with good verses and passion in each paragraph. Overall, the book is seen as a unique and magical piece of work that is worth exploring.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Sadly disappointing.
Excited to find it recorded in Middle English (rather than the dreaded Nevill Coghill version); but on listening, pronunciation was all wrong and (to my taste) spoken with poor feel both for prosody and for meaning. Often enough these problems combine to rob the lines of syllables, so that proper scansion is totally banished.2 people found this helpful
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This is by far the worst audiobook I've ever listened to on Scribd and one of the worse I've experienced in general, and I say that as a fan of amateur audiobooks. I had to give up half-way through chapter 4 because the absolutely awful narration was giving me a migraine. I don't know if the other narrators are better and I'm not going to keep listening to find out. This one I'm gonna read with my eyes.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The procession that crosses Chaucer's pages is as full of life and as richly textured as a medieval tapestry. The Knight, the Miller, the Friar, the Squire, the Prioress, the Wife of Bath, and others who make up the cast of characters -- including Chaucer himself -- are real people, with human emotions and weaknesses. When it is remembered that Chaucer wrote in English at a time when Latin was the standard literary language across western Europe, the magnitude of his achievement is even more remarkable. But Chaucer's genius needs no historical introduction; it bursts forth from every page of The Canterbury Tales.
If we trust the General Prologue, Chaucer intended that each pilgrim should tell two tales on the way to Canterbury and two tales on the way back. He never finished his enormous project and even the completed tales were not finally revised. Scholars are uncertain about the order of the tales. As the printing press had yet to be invented when Chaucer wrote his works, The Canterbury Tales has been passed down in several handwritten manuscripts.1 person found this helpful
