    Julian Sorel is a handsome, naïve but not wholly innocent young man, born of peasant stock. He is, however, very ambitious and determined to succeed in life and make a career for himself. If this involves lying, guile and hypocrisy- so be it. Not so long ago two professions would have been open to him- the Army or the Church- but in the wake of Waterloo and the defeat of Napoleon it would be preferable to take Holy Orders. Fortunately Mr de Renal, Mayor of Verrieres, is in need of a status symbol to impress his peers and engages the young man as tutor to his children. Mr de Renal has a very pretty younger wife and the decision is postponed while Julian indulges in a deceitful affair and learns another skill. Eventually the time comes when he must leave the town and attend his theological studies at Besancon. Unfortunately his devious practices and underhand schemes don’t work at the seminary- they are more corrupt than he is. Setting his story in the unstable period of the Bourbon restoration, when several factions were cynically vying for their own self interest, Stendhal exposes the morally bankrupt local government and the grasping materialism of the church with a deftness which earned him Zolas acclamation ‘the Father of us all’.

    <p>Henri Beyle, Stendhal a partir de la publicación de su tercer libro, nació en 1783 en Grenoble, «cuartel general de la ruindad», hijo de un abogado del Parlamento. Estudió en su ciudad natal y en 1799 marchó a París para ingresar en la Escuela Politécnica, cosa que nunca llegó a hacer. Un año después se alistó en el Ejército y tomó parte en las campañas de Alemania, Austria y Rusia de Napoleón, a quien siempre vería como un héroe. Tras la derrota, en 1814, se exilió voluntariamente en Milán. En 1815, publicó, bajo pseudónimo, su primera obra, las <i>Cartas sobre Haydn, Mozart y Metastasio</i> (de la que en Alba extrajimos <i>La Vida de Mozart</i>, ALBA CLÁSICA BIOGRAFÍAS núm. III) y en 1817, la <i>Historia de la pintura en Italia y Roma, Nápoles y Florencia</i>, esta última ya como Stendhal. Perseguido por liberal, tuvo que dejar Milán, y, entre Londres y París, empezó a frecuentar los salones literarios. Su ensayo <i>Del amor aparecería</i> en 1822; su primera novela, <i>Armancia</i> (1827), la publicó sin nombre en París, y sería seguida en 1830 por una de sus obras capitales, <i>Rojo y negro</i>. En 1831 fue nombrado cónsul en Civitavecchia, en los Estados Pontificios. Su otra gran novela, <i>La Cartuja de Parma</i>, aparecería en 1839. Una selección aforística de pasajes sobre el amor puede encontrarse en <i>Diccionario del amor</i> (ALBA CLÁSICA núm. CII). Murió en París en 1842. En su tumba mandó grabar el nombre de Arrigo Beyle, milanese.</p>
