About this audiobook
Beowulf. [Translated by Francis Barton Gummere].This is a short but beautiful book, and the Gummere translation really captures the feel of the Old English. Beowulf tells the story of a mysterious young warrior who saves the Spear-Danes from the terrible monster Grendel and his venomous mother. Long a mainstay of English Literature 101 courses at universities around the world, it is not only one of the oldest, but one of the most exciting English folktales ever invented. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I love Gummere's alliterative translation of Beowulf, and it was good to hear it read aloud, the way it was meant to be heard in the mead halls of Anglo-Saxon England. But the sound quality is fairly poor, and the reading lacks a certain something. I'd love to hear it read by a really great voice actor: someone of the stature of, say, Patrick Stewart (picked for no other reason than that he was the first actor who popped into my head). Overall, good, but could be better.
