About this audiobook

The Virgin and the Gypsy is a novella by D.H. Lawrence, published posthumously in 1930. Set in the East Midlands of England shortly after World War I, the story revolves around two sisters, Yvette and Lucille, who return from finishing school to a stifling domestic life dominated by their blind, manipulative grandmother (referred to as "Mater") and their resentful Aunt Cissie. The narrative begins with the backdrop of their mother’s scandalous departure with a younger man, leaving their father, an Anglican vicar, emotionally paralyzed and unable to address the family’s shame.

As Yvette and Lucille navigate their oppressive environment, Yvette becomes increasingly disillusioned with the constraints of her life. While Lucille embraces flirtations with local men, Yvette feels trapped by societal expectations and yearns for freedom.Yvette's life changes dramatically when she encounters a handsome gypsy man during an outing. He represents everything she longs for—passion, vitality, and liberation from her mundane existence. This meeting awakens her sexual curiosity and desire for a more adventurous life.
