Introduction
This book will not explain how to solve Sudoku puzzles; it will explain how to create Sudoku puzzles. The distinction is interesting. Solving Sudoku puzzles involves recognizing patterns among numbers. Creating Sudoku puzzles involves understanding the structure of Sudoku mathematics, and transforming this structure into a puzzle.
This book uses the terms standard Sudoku puzzle
and newspaper Sudoku puzzle
to describe the common puzzles that contain 81 numbers (9x9) and are found in newspapers and on the Internet. We will explain how to create non-standard Sudoku puzzles, for example puzzles that contain 625 numbers (25x25) and 2401 numbers (49x49).
Background
Before we begin exploring Sudoku puzzles, we'll explain some elementary mathematics: counting, exponentiation, number bases, and modulo arithmetic. Don't worry, these are easy to understand and we provide simple explanations.
Counting
Understanding counting is crucial for creating Sudoku puzzles. If
