      Introduction

      How deep is your understanding of scripture? Do you know what you believe and why? These are two basic questions that all Christians should be asking themselves.

      Unfortunately a lot of Christians treat the bible like a fortune cookie or daily horoscope. What is my motivational thought for the day, what words of wisdom can I ponder while at work, what scripture can I learn to look spiritual next time I bump into the minister, what message has God got for me today.

      Try some of these gems:

      - Song Of Songs 4:2 (morning devotion)

      - Joshua 2:1 (evening devotion)

      - Exodus 16:35 (Grace before eating)

      Worse still, maybe you don’t even read the bible and await words of wisdom from the likes of motivational videos, inspiring devotionals or self-help books. Or is the Sunday sermon your emotional trip to recharge you for the week?

      Don’t get me wrong - Devotional books, motivational speakers and self help material all have their place and purpose, but I sincerely believe a mature Christian should look deeper than these self centred material and get into the actual word of God.

      All I can plead is for you to open your bible and study with intent. Pray and seek the heart and mind of God. Don’t just feed yourself once a week on Sunday (I hope you get proper biblical food at church) but feed yourself daily.

      Treat the scripture like daily bread, something to be devoured and consumed. Don’t just read it but study it and make it your top priority to get familiar with its contents, getting to know it and its author intimately.

      This brief study will scan over the entire biblical story to highlight themes and topics that I hope will lead to further deeper study. I have structured it so that a home bible study group could tackle one topic at a time. The research tasks and questions I have included are suggestive only and should be given prior to a study meeting.

      The material contained in the study came largely from school related research work and ties in with my other study books. Some of this study in fact contains extracts from the larger and more comprehensive studies and can be considered a prerequisite and introduction to my other studies found at smashwords.com! Cheers.

      Section 1) What Do You Believe

      Core Values and Beliefs – What’s yours theology

      The definition of core values and beliefs creates the foundation of any successful business. How much more important then is taking the time and effort to define your basic Christians beliefs! At stake may not be a business and assurance of financial success, but something much more important – you and your effective influence in bringing others to Christ.

      Accurately defining your core beliefs from biblical truths is very important, but it will become a useless exercise unless you live by those beliefs and incorporate them into everyday life. It is only by the practical application of what you believe that you will change your life and the lives of others.

      This section will look at two aspects of theology and discuss how to incorporate them into everyday Christian living.

      1) Apologetics

      Theoretical Understanding.

      The field of Apologetics is focused on building up a sufficient understanding of theological topics so that you are able to give an accurate and adequate response to questions people will ask of you about your reasons for belief.

      If you really want to know God and understand his ways, then you have to study the scriptures. To help us in our study of the word of God we can use resources such as:

      - Books and other aids, ensuring you examine them for scriptural truth (Acts 17:10 to 11). By all means use study guides and books in your pursuit of knowledge, but don't read them as Gospel! Question and test the things you read and learn. It is only Gods words you can fully trust as 100% accurate and true!

      - Other people, such as home groups, mentors, friends and family (Acts 8:30).

      - Teachers/Pastors/Elders (Rom 12:7, 1 Cor 12:28 to 29, Eph 4:11 to 16, Heb 5:11 to 14). Do not rely on others I THINK opinions but use a real knowledgeable teacher! Scripture cannot mean something different to different people, it must mean what God intended it to mean. Gods own interpretation is revealed in the bible itself. The what does it mean to me can be used in the application to your life, not to the INTENT of the scripture. One interpretation, possible multiple applications.

      - Prayer, because the word of God is received through the Spirit of God (1 Cor. 2:14).

      Our God is not a God of confusion! He is a God of order and logic and if we put a little time and effort into our studies then we will be rewarded. We cannot possibly know the complete story of Gods plans though, it's just too big! (1 Cor 13:12). An in-depth understanding though will always enhance your faith and better equip you for ministering to others.

      Question - Is your theological understanding based on what you have been told or what you have researched, studied and asked God about yourself?

      Practical Integration.

      Your accumulated knowledge and understanding of theological topics will enhance your own personal spiritual life by bringing you to a deeper understanding of the personality of God. If you really love somebody you will surely want to know them more and more.

      God is not a secret and we sincerely want others to know of the joy in knowing God. When people start asking questions you should have a ready defence. But how do you handle difficulties and accusations pointed at the bible? Many so-called discrepancies and difficulties are superficial and simple explanations are available but some may require a little research. You cannot be expected to be an expert on
