About this ebook
The primary aim of this book is to provide students of English as a foreign or second language with an opportunity to do some simple grammar exercises when they have a limited amount of free time, for example whilst waiting for a friend to join them for lunch or whilst taking a short bus journey. The explanations of grammar problems are therefore not extensive.
Each entry contains a short explanation on correct usage and is followed by an exercise (usually of ten items). There is an answer key at the end of the book. Sometimes, suggested answers are given where there are many possible answers or where learners have been encouraged to create their own examples.

I have been teaching English as a foreign language since 1990, mainly in the Czech Republic and China. I have written several books on IELTS that have been published in China, selling over 200,000 copies. My work has also been used to create various apps which have been downloaded tens of thousands of times. The books that I will be publishing on Smashwords are updates of my published works, modified for the international market. The majority of books will be in the 'English 101 Series' which has proven so popular in China. The cover photographs on the Smashwords editions are all by the author.

Each entry contains a short explanation on correct usage and is followed by an exercise (usually of ten items). There is an answer key at the end of the book. Sometimes, suggested answers are given where there are many possible answers or where learners have been encouraged to create their own examples.
Every fifth entry is hyperlinked to the corresponding entry in the answer key. Users can scroll to the exact set of answers from there. By clicking on ‘Back to top’ which is inserted after every 5 entries in the answers key, the reader can return to the start of the book. Then, the reader can follow a link to another entry.

When using the present simple, remember to add 's' or 'es' to most verbs when using he, she or it, e.g. I work, she works.

We use 'don't' and 'doesn't' to create negative present simple sentences with most verbs.
Make negative present simple sentences using the following prompts.
1. I no like swimming.

4. We no see each other very often.
5. I no watch TV much.
6. They no live in Beijing.
7. It not rain here very much.
8. She no study very hard.
9. He no play basketball.
10. This computer no work.
3. Present continuous (for current actions)
We use the present continuous for things that are happening now, e.g. 'I am reading a book'.
Change the following sentences from the present simple to the present continuous.
1. I watch a film.
2. She eats a cake.
3. He walks his dog.
4. We play a computer game.
5. It rains.
6. They don't watch TV.
7. I don't play golf.
8. It doesn't snow.
9. He doesn't read a newspaper.
10. She doesn't cross the road.

We use the present continuous to talk about changes that are happening around the time when we are speaking (or writing).
Complete
