    Plan ahead for international travel and avoid costly

    bureaucratic delays with passports and visas.

    Passport

    1. Get a Passport

    While obtaining a passport may seem obvious to many, airline personnel occasionally encounter passengers checking in at the airport for an international flight without a passport. In these cases, passport-less passengers are denied entry on to the airplane and may lose the value of their ticket. If you are crossing international borders via land, a passport may not be required. Check on the website of the consulate or embassy of the country you are going to visit to verify if you need a passport.

    If you are stateless–this applies mainly to refugees–an immigrant, or seeking political asylum, you will have to ask for travel papers from the Immigration Department or Ministry of the country where you reside.

    In the United States, applying for a new passport through the State Department takes about four weeks and renewing a

    previously existing passport takes about two weeks. Some post offices handle new passport processing. It’s best to check the

    State Department’s website for information. If you apply close

    to the busy summer and Christmas travel seasons, you may

    experience delays. Expedited passport processing is expensive and requires you to visit the closest US Passport Agency on a business day. There are Passport Agencies in major US cities.

    2. Before you leave your home country, check that your passport is valid for at least 90 days

    Some countries will not let you enter their territory if your passport will expire within 90 or 180 days. You do not want to end up at an airport or border crossing with an almost expired passport. The border guards of a country may deny you entry, forcing you to return home at your own expense and drastically change your travel plans. Know when your passport expires.

    Visas

    3. Check to make sure if you need a visa for the country or countries you will be visiting

    A visa is an entry permit issued by the government of the country you are visiting. There are tourist, business, educational, family reunification visas, as well as other categories of visas.

    WARNING: It’s your responsibility to know the visa regulations of the countries you will visit. Check with the local embassy or consulate of the country you intend to visit if you need a visa.

    If you buy an incredibly cheap plane ticket that is non-changeable or refundable, you may lose your entire ticket if you arrive at the airport without a visa and are denied entry on the plane. Don’t bet on the airline staff taking pity on your ignorance of visa rules and permitting you to modify a non-changeable ticket.

    When you buy plane tickets on the Internet, no screen appears telling you if you do or do not need a visa. Even travel agents forget or neglect to inform clients that they require a visa for their trips. Travel
