    Preface

It is unfortunate to know that in the Hiroshima accident 3 lakh people had died but 14 times death occurs today every year because of tobacco against which no concrete action is being taken. Why no one raises voice sternly in spite of 55000 people die daily telling us drowning of five Titanics as in the Titanic incident 11000 deaths had occurred? Instead of action tobacco companies are misguiding the youths by showing tobacco as an ego cum energy boosting product, bringing liveliness, females being attracting towards tobacco eating people. The warning that they write as tobacco chewing is injurious to health is less appealing than the impressive and appealing messages that they pass through smoking and chewing tobacco via their energy boosting lively advertisements. These tobacco manufacturers are making their pockets heavy day by day with the increasing population towards tobacco; instead allowing them to do publicity of their products rather they should be forced to stop such products with regards to humanity by driving anti-tobacco drives.

Smoker programs his brain in such a manner that it starts feeling energetic and sleepless only after smoking and chewing tobacco thereby making him work efficiently. In this process his rest part of body leaves the company of his brain as this is the reason for which his body starts becoming weak, with slow functioning of his liver, weak functioning of kidneys with burnt lungs along with high blood pressure an anaemic; also his further growth thereby stops making his life’s longevity to half.

    15. Summary

    1. Cigarette, Bidi, Hukka, Cigar

Cigarette, Bidi, hukka- Cigar is some of the means to inhale tobacco. In this chapter we will discuss about these means in detail.

Bidi is made out of leaves of Tendu. They are mostly handmade and are a type of cigarette without filter. The weight of the leave is 60percent and the balance is tobacco. The length of bedi is approximately 4 to 8 cm. and the thickness is 0.7 to 0.9 cm. in many places it has become a necessary of culture. In many countries people offer bidi’s to their guest on occasions like marriage, social gatherings etc. In this way it has achieved a place in society.

    Ingredients

The tobacco used in bidi has all the ingredients which we have discussed before. On the contrary the proportion of Nicotine present in bidi is much more then compared to the cigarettes made in western countries. On this basis bidi is more harmful to our health. The quantity of Nicotine in bidi is 30.70mg per gram tobacco. Each filter cigarette contains 16.54mg/gm, of nicotine in it. In few researches no Indian bidi, we have found radioactive ingredient like Uranium also.

    Diseases caused by Bidi

In researches we have found that Bidi is more harmful than cigarette. Smoking of bidi commonly leads to diseases like mouth cancer, lung cancer, throat cancer, heart related problems, asthma and all other diseases what we have discussed above. It will be wrong if we assume that these diseases are not caused by smoking cigarettes.

The serious issue is that Bidi is a big killer among poor. It is affecting the poor people who are making these as well as the poor who are smoking this equally. It is a bigger problem for those who make this. Since they are paid very low wages to make this and hence they are financially very poor and suffered. They are affected by the tobacco while making and get addicted to it. By smoking they are dually affected by the tobacco of bidi.

    Cigarette

It is observed that throughout the world 30percent of death caused by cancer is due to smoking.87percent of lungs diseases are caused due to inhaling the fumes of cigarette. Since 1987 lung cancer has become very prominent in ladies.

It is observed that smoking cigarette started in 9th century in Central America. During those days they use to use pipes. They use to fill tobacco in the pipes and smoke in 17th century tobacco was rolled in paper and smoked. In 1830 cigarette moved from America to France in Europe, where it got its name as ‘cigarette’. In 1845 cigarette started being manufactured in France. In 20th century all of a sudden it became very popular in western countries. During first and Second world war soldiers were supplied with cigarettes along with their food supplies at the war front. During the end of 20th century the injurious effects of cigarette started being noticed by the world, and May government started protesting against the consumption of cigarettes.

    Diseases caused by cigarettes

Cigarette causes all the diseases what we have discussed above in detail. The main component of cigarette is tobacco. Tobacco is a green leaf bush which grows well in hot climate. To cultivate tobacco farmers use many types of chemicals. Harmful chemicals and pesticides are commonly used by the farmers to cultivate tobacco.

Once the plant grows, farmers pluck the leaves and dry them. Later on these dried leaves are processed in machine to make them fine. During processing they add many harmful other ingredients which makes tobacco more harmful then its basic nature.

In last chapter we have discussed in detail about the harmful ingredients found in tobacco, hence we will not repeat again. Our body is made out of thousand cells. New cells are built in a healthy body only when there is a requirement of it. Cancer caused by smoking is due to building of non-required cells in our body. These non-required cells start building up in our body and become harmful for normal cells. If these cells continue building up then they form a lump in our body. Initially it is of a size of a pea and later on it increases to a size of a grape. This lump in further stages becomes cancer. This is how smoking cigarette becomes harmful for our body.

The ingredients found in cigarette not only cause cancer but many other serious health problems too. Few of the ingredients in cigarette are very harmful. If a person chews and eat a packet of cigarette, may lead him to his death.

When a smoker smokes cigarette, carbon monoxide starts mixing in his blood. It reduces the amount of oxygen reaching to heart. More over the ingredients present in cigarettes contracts the wall of the blood carrying veins. Since oxygen supply is reduced, heart has to work harder which may even lead
