Stephanie McCallister had the best brother in the entire world. Six years her senior, Ian made time for her no matter what. Always had, always would. And today’s lunch date had her giving the Cheshire cat a run for his money.
Her grin, however, had nothing to do with KKLV-TV’s Assignment Editor, Gavin Scott. Or the wink he’d just sent her way. Nope. Gavin didn’t have anything to do with the way her heart beat faster or the heat flooding her veins. Not a dang thing.
Her brother had no idea how she felt about his colleague, or the fact that they’d been out, or that Gavin’s kisses kept her warm on more than one cold January night. Because being close to her brother didn’t mean she told him everything.
Stephanie didn’t have the best track record when it came to love and until she was sure Gavin was sticking around, she had no intention of telling her brother about the relationship. No sense in Ian wanting to pummel Gavin when it didn’t work out. If it didn’t work out.
Oh man, she hoped it worked out. She really wanted Gavin to stick around, because she never wanted to let him go. She was falling fast. Just wasn’t ready to admit it yet. At least not verbally.
Can you hang out for a second?
Ian took hold of her arm to keep her from tripping over a chair. She smiled in gratitude. He raised a brow. You okay?
Yeah. Yeah. I’m fine.
Gavin grinned and rolled his eyes. Kill her now. She’d never been graceful, no big shocker there, but come on!
Why are you blushing?
Ian asked, eyes narrowed.
Shh!
she hissed. I’m fine.
Ian glanced over his shoulder and a chuckle burst out as he looked back at her. You could do worse. You could do better, but you could definitely do worse.
Whatever. Just go get your crap done so we can get out of here.
The last thing she needed was her brother offering a helpful hand, especially trying to cultivate an already existing relationship—‘cause that wouldn’t be awkward at all.
He gave Gavin a thumbs-up as he walked by the assignment desk. Gavin laughed, flashed the thumbs on both hands, and winked at her again.
Seriously!
What had she been saying about her brother being the greatest in the world? Excuse her, she’d been smoking something. Her brother was Satan reincarnated.
Ian sauntered off, disappearing down a hallway that she’d learned on an earlier visit led to the sports department.
Not willing to miss an opportunity to speak with Gavin, she meandered over to the assignment desk. All the while keeping an eye out for Ian’s return, she smiled, attempting a sexy, Hi.
Original, Steph.
Hey.
His smile weakened her knees. I was thinking we could catch a movie tomorrow night.
Yeah. I’d like that.
She licked her lip and he noticed, groaning a bit.
Oh man, I want to kiss you right now.
Her eyes sought his mouth. I know what you mean.
He glanced over his shoulder, scanning the direction Ian had gone. Screw it.
His gaze blazed and in the next second, he’d leaned over the desk, pressing his lips to hers in a quick kiss. With slow, obvious effort, he righted himself, moaning slightly. Good, but not nearly long enough.
She put her hand to her lips. I know what you mean.
The phone rang. Sorry, love, duty calls.
No problem,
she said, not missing that he’d just called her love. We’ll talk later.
He nodded, putting the phone to his ear.
