has passed into the Age of the Electron
. Long live steam! This book is meant to show some of the machines that were made from iron and steel and powered by steam and represent the highest achievement of the steam age. The machines in the following pages are machines that are responsible for the production of the most useful products and tools that we enjoy today.
The machinery in this book was designed and fabricated in the latter part of the 1800's and powered directly with steam engines fueled with fossilized solar energy (coal).
The development of this technology started when trees were no longer sufficient to provide the heat requirements of the growing populations. England had large reserves of coal and as mines
