Chapter 1 Trapped in the Psychiatric Hospital

A young woman with long brown hair and green eyes sat on her bed staring blankly at a flat t.v. screen and clutching her teddy bear. She was in a small metal room with bars covering the only window to the outside. There was a small chest of drawers and a little closet inside the small room. The door was locked from the outside and led into a hallway. The young woman was in a psychiatric hospital. The hospital itself was made of dull, gray bricks. It was located in a dome in the northern region of the planet of Eris.

Eris’s atmosphere and surface wasn’t habitable. It was cheaper and easier for humans to build domes for the individual cities than it would be to terraform the planet.

The domes could be outfitted with lights to simulate the night and day cycles humans were used to on Earth. The sun was a distant star to Eris. It never rained inside the domes and it never needed to.

However, the temperature in all the domes wasn’t very much above 60 degrees Fahrenheit or about 16 degrees Celsius. Eris was such a cold planet to begin with and it took too much energy to heat the individual domes up. The excess carbon dioxide helped, but the surface temperature of the planet was much colder than the domes ever were.

The young woman continued to stare blankly at the t.v. On it were images of happy housewives. She thought all their smiles were fake. Her mother certainly was never that happy or did any housework. Many of the housewives were dressed to the nines and cheerfully waited on their husbands and children. Funny how many had half a dozen or more children to look after at one time.

The images were all black and white. The young woman lived in full color. Sometimes she thought it would be okay to be married if the husband would treat her well, appreciate her, and never ask her to give up her job. She jerked and her eyes grew wide at the thought.

The doctor came to her door which had a small window in it. The nurse opened the door, and the patient did not move.

Anastasia, why don’t we go for a walk in the courtyard? asked the doctor.

Okay, was Anastasia’s reply. She got up from her bed, set the teddy bear down, and went outside with the doctor.

Outside was really outside of the hospital, but inside the dome. Each dome city on Eris was different. This dome for the city of Haunted Hallow never had bright lights, especially around the hospital. It was dark and gloomy all the time as if expecting rain that would never come.

Anastasia, I’ve been reviewing your case and watching your progress. I’ve decided to grant you a pass to be out in the world for a little while. Would you like that?

She stopped and turned towards the doctor. Yes, I would like that very much, sir.

Well, Anastasia, would you like to visit your mother for a week or so?

I guess so since I haven’t seen her for a couple of years.

We can make arrangements for you to meet her. We will send you with an escort to the train station. Will that be okay?

Oh, yes, I will go and behave. I have learned that what I did was wrong and I won’t ever do anything like that again.

Good, I’m glad to hear you say that. You can leave in the morning right after breakfast. You escort will drop you off at the train station and make sure that you get on your train. You will be on your own from there.

Thank you, sir. Without losing any time, she was escorted back to her little room. Anastasia was so happy that she danced. The opportunity that she had been hoping for had finally arrived. So it had helped to play their little game– just cooperate, say what they want to hear, act the way they want you to, and they will let you out sooner or later.

How long had she had to just sit in her room staring at the t.v.? How long had she had to learn what they wanted to hear? How long did she have to stare at the gloom inside and outside of the hospital? Too long. She felt like she had been drifting and now things were going to change for the better. As long as the escort didn’t know which dome city her family lived in, she would be able to escape from the nightmare she had been forced to live for the past few years.

It would be great to be human again instead of a robot devoid of all thought and emotion. Anastasia had a long night alone in her cell with her teddy bear as her only comfort.

    Chapter 2 Mourning

In a farm house, in the dome city of Cat Falls, a young man with blonde hair and brown eyes bent over his mother’s bed. He held her hand. With tears in his eyes, he asked her, Mom, Mom, please don’t leave me now. I need you. I don’t want to be alone.

She moved her head to one side and looked up at her only child. Softly, she replied to him, Dear Samuel, it’s my time to go, but don’t you worry. She will come. I dreamed a young woman with long brown hair and green eyes will come here. She will find a way to you. Her head rolled back and she let go of his hand.

Tears streamed freely down his checks. Who will come? I’m not sure what you’re talking about, Mom, but if she will keep me from being alone, then let her come. He paused to let go of her hand. Okay, I know you dream true, Mom. I have dreamed true about poor Freddy and it came true as well. I just need to be patient. He wiped his tears away after a few moments and grabbed his hat. Then he proceeded to the undertaker.

That night Samuel dreamed. He sat on the porch and saw a young woman with long brown hair and green eyes. She was smiling at him. She was near the porch and was dancing. He stood up and walked over to her. He wanted to dance with her, but just when he was about to start, he shapeshifted into a large tawny cat. He stood still, but the young woman kept dancing.

Samuel woke up, startled. He was sweating. He wasn’t that
