      I am in a big reading drought. Books I should be totally into, I am finding dull. Instead of three books a week, I have been lucky to get through one. Basically, I haven't been my normal book devouring self. Then this novella came along. I pre-ordered this for my kindle quite awhile ago and hadn't forgotten exactly when it was supposed to come out. Then I turned on my kindle, and there it was...the bright and shiny cover beckoning me to read it. I dug right in. Praise the powers that be! I loved this novella so much! When I stumbled upon the first novel in the Cady series, I was impressed. The second one sealed the deal. I love the characters very much, especially the amazing realistic Jupiter. I am pleased to say that "Leashing the Tempest" is a full and exciting short story. There is a beginning, a middle, and a end to the plot in this novella. Lon decides to hire a boat to take Cady and Jup (as well as Cady's friend) out for the day. Jupe wants to practice using his newly discovered talent and Lon is trying to decide if he should purchase his own boat. But there is definitely something fishy going on with this boat and its captain. Pretty soon things go from bad to worse and Cady is forced to use her powers to 'leash the tempest'. Like the two full length novels, this story succeeds not just because of an exciting plotline but because these characters are just so likeable. They are written with such depth that the reader feels like they are real people. Cady is among my favorite urban fantasy/sci-fi heroines and I can seriously go on all day about how wonderful fourteen year old Jupiter is. Jupiter provided several laugh out loud moments here and my husband gave me that 'wow, are you strange' look when I burst into giggles while reading this tale. If you have managed to miss the first stories, go right now and buy them. If you have read the first two, you probably already have "Leashing The Tempest" on your radar. Read it! Hopefully, this is the end of my reading drought!

      Cady, Lon and Jupe, along with Cady’s friend Kar Yee take a 3 hour boat trip so that Lon can photograph whales and dolphins and Jupe can practice his knack on Kar Yee. If only things were that simple, there wouldn’t be a story. And no, this isn’t a Gilligan’s Island story. The best aspects of this series are the characters and relationships and it’s become one of my favorites in the Urban Fantasy genre. And make no mistake; there is plenty of a supernatural element to the stories. Morals play a big part in the series as Jupe learns not only how to use his knack, but also when he shouldn’t. This is something Cady has learned to be careful with as more of her own abilities come online. When this author becomes more widely known, I think she’ll prove to be competition to the current heavy hitters in this genre.Cady’s relationship with Lon and his teenage son, Jupe really make the story something special. I’m just sorry it’s a short novella.

Jupe Butler, 16 yr. old son to Cady’s sexy boyfriend Lon, came into his demon ability during the last book, Kindling the Moon; and boy is it a doozy. Jupe can influence people and make them do whatever he wants. Rightly, Cady and Lon want him to explore the limits of this new ability where he can’t do too much damage. Along with Cady’s partner, Kar Yee, they charter a boat for the afternoon to do just that. What can go wrong with them all alone surrounded by the endless sea? Well, let’s just say that Cady has never had that kind of luck.Jupe’s talent is scary to think about anyone having, let alone a teenage boy. The potential for disaster is staggering. Luckily, Jupe has the love and support of his father and Cady to help him through the adjustment. Can Jupe learn the lesson of “with great power comes great responsibility” without having to do it the hard way? And for that matter, can ANY teenager appreciate the consequences of their actions without having to go live through it first?The Captain on this sea-faring voyage has issues of his own. Cady notices the protective wards that surround the entire ship and begins to worry that they may have more to be concerned with than just Jupe’s training. Will the Captain’s problems become the groups as well? I love the fact that, no matter where they go, Cady and company seem to invite trouble to tag along with them. At this point, shouldn’t the characters realize this and start to plan accordingly?The storm that begins to ravage and rage against the boat is a great metaphor for the series as a whole. Not one to back down, Cady seems to battle forces much greater than herself on a consistent basis. Like the weather, these forces are unstoppable and hard to bypass. While she may be beaten down by the wind and rain of overwhelming odds, Cady never gives up and continues on. She is an inspiration to those around her as well as those that follow along on her journey.Though this novella has serious themes to it, it doesn’t lose the trademark humor that is found in the rest of the books. The fact that this little make-shift family can still joke and laugh with one another during the most trying circumstances is one of the many reasons that keep me coming back for more. Bennett delivers, yet again, another great tale that only whets my appetite for the next book.Leashing the Tempest is filled with demon disasters and daring deeds. While it may be a novella attached to the Arcadia Bell series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Perhaps it will serve as an incentive for those that have yet to experience the coolness that is Cady.Notable Scene: “All right, Jupe. No dangerous dares. No intimate questions.”Jupe’s face pinched. “What the hell does that mean?”“It means don’t ask anything creepy,” I translated.“Like…” Jupe trailed off, a devilish look in his eye.Oh, God. Here we go.“Like, don’t ask about her safe word?”“Safe word?” Kar Yee repeated. “What the hell is that?”Lon cursed under his breath.FTC Advisory: Jenn Bennett provided me with a copy of Leashing the Tempest.       A nice relaxing day cruise turns dangerous quickly when Jupe decides to get angry with the captain and his little power trip up leads them in deep water rather quickly. Together Cady, Lon, Jupe and Kar Yee get themselves out of trouble and back to dry land. Jupe continues to make me laugh, he is a great character that I couldn't imagine not being in the series. We get little glimpses of Kar Yee in the full stories but it was great seeing her be part of the action and solution in LEASHING THE TEMPEST. The problem that the characters face was pretty neat to witness and crazy to think about.LEASHING THE TEMPEST ended up being a neat little adventure with our favorite Arcadia Bell series characters. Its short, sweet and to the point. It will definitely hold you over until book 3 BINDING THE SHADOWS releases in May 2013.

    It didn’t seem like the sort of boat that got lost at sea. But what did I know? I’d been on all of two boats in my twenty-five years, and neither was remarkable.

    This, however, was a sexy luxury yacht: gleaming metal, glossy white hull, polished wood deck. It bobbed in the sparkling water at the end of the pier, putting the other fishing and diving boats to shame, like a high-end sports car parked in a row of rusted-out pickup trucks. Lon had chartered it for the afternoon, and though it was a little windy out on the pier, it was sunny and beautiful. A near perfect November day. A good day to live in central California.

    I can almost see the name of the boat. Jupe strode across weathered dock boards, leaving Lon and me behind as he craned his neck for a better look. "Baba Yaga? Like the movie?"

    Like the Russian fairy tale, I said.

    Oh, he said in disappointment. Is this a Russian boat?

    I’m not answering stupid questions today, Lon said in a deep voice, which, much like his personality, was eternally even-keeled. A brisk afternoon breeze carrying the salty tang of the Pacific rustled his shoulder-length golden brown hair, which, combined with his roguish pirate mustache, faded T-shirt, and lean, muscular physique, gave him an Aging Surfer vibe. But the reserved way he held his six-foot frame in check and the wary squint of his perpetually narrowed eyes made strangers think twice about approaching him.

    Brown spiral curls bounced as his lanky fourteen-year-old son turned around to face us. What did you say? he shouted at Lon.

    Your dad is selling you to a Russian family, I called back. Several people milling around the pier gave me the stink-eye.

    Fine by me. That means you have to start taking out the garbage, though. Jupe absently swung a cooler in one hand as his steps quickened. His wispy spring green halo was barely visible in the afternoon sun. Oh, man. Check out the deck. Hurry, Cady.

    Dream on, kid. I wasn’t doing any hurrying. I had the weekend off from my Tiki bar, and Lon promised me a relaxing three-hour cruise down the Big Sur coastline. See some whales. Eat some fabulous food that Lon’s housekeepers had packed. Soak up some sun and be perfectly lazy.

    Lon and I had a few of other motives for the trip. One of them was to grant my best friend and co-owner of Tambuku, Kar Yee, a chance to get to know my new family a little better—and vice versa. Kar Yee had volunteered to be Jupe’s test subject for the afternoon, allowing him to do a little experimentation with his blooming demonic ability. And when I say volunteered, it’s more like Jupe had finally worn her down with his please-please-please begging.

    Really, it seemed like a full-immersion, crash course in getting to know my family, so I hoped she wouldn’t live to regret this decision, or I’d never hear the end of it. She’d already texted to complain about the half-hour slog from the city to the coast, but I hadn’t spotted her car when we drove up.

    She’s late, Lon noted, either reading my emotions with his demonic empathy, or noticing my fidgety glances around the boardwalk as I searched for her.

    Kar Yee was never late. She’s here somewhere. Considering the insane amount of money you’re paying the charter company, I think they can hold the boat for a few minutes.

    He grunted a reluctant reply.

    Cady! Jupe motioned widely with one long arm, beckoning us like he was directing concert traffic into a twenty-dollar stadium parking lot. He pointed at painted script across the side of the fishing boat next to our chartered yacht: Silver Girl. Check it out. That one’s named after you, he said, giving me a goofy grin.

    Even though I was human, I had a silver halo, setting me apart from both the halo-free humans and the typically green-and-blue haloed Earthbound demons that outnumbered them in this seaside town. The wispy cloud of silver light hanging over my head frequently got me curious looks
