This story was originally inspired by a filk song. With revisions I have made this a part of the Echoes of Elder Times collection. In the mythic lore of the Asian people there are many tales of Kitsune or Fox Women. A bargain struck with these women is very powerful and they will keep their word unto death.
SHE RAN, A HAND TO her swollen belly. Tears coursed down her cheeks, but the only sound coming from her lips was that of exhausted breathing. She had fled into the night wearing little more than her nightgown and her bare feet were now cut and half frozen.
Behind her she could just hear the sound of the men who pursued her, the bandits who had killed her husband and the men who guarded their home. She continued to climb, toward the temple and the only form of safety that her panicked mind could think of.
The old temple that was nestled high in these mountains. It was more legend than fact, but she hoped that the legend was true. Hoped that somewhere above her there was a temple to the old ones and that the ancient legends where true and vengeance could be found, if for a high price.
Stumbling over an exposed root, she fell to her knees, letting out a small cry as she felt a stabbing pain in her belly. Though the sound was not loud, it was loud enough to attract the attention of her pursuers. With cries of triumph they ran toward the downed noble woman.
Out of the darkness they swarmed toward her, their intention clear in their faces. They had finally caught the last of the old clan and now it would end. The woman and the heir she carried would die on the mountain trail. Now!
As the tall and hairy bandit chieftain came closer he smiled. I win.
FUMIKO CLOSED HER EYES as she felt the bandits surround her. She was no warrior, held no skills to hold off the attackers. She cradled her belly and the child who meant everything to her inside. She wasn't sure where the words came from, but she said them, so softly that only one could hear them.
Fox woman, sister, I call you. Come to me, come for the life I offer you.
Out of the darkness magic flowed. Magic wild and free, sending images to the bandits that froze them in their tracks. Out of that same darkness a creature formed near to Fumiko and moved to protect her. What the bandits saw is not known, but Fumiko looked up into the foxfire eyes of a creature half fox, half woman.
As the bandits ran from visions of creatures from nightmares the image gestured upward, helping Fumiko to stand. It was painful, more painful than she knew it should be. The flight through the night-darkened forest had torn her up inside and she could feel something slick sliding down her legs.
THE BANDITS GATHERED once more below the rock path leading to the temple. Many of them murmured in fear. Not a candle mark before a legend was brought to life before their eyes, one that could destroy them if they fought it. Or so most of them believed.
Tamaru did not believe in old legends, or not totally. He believed in the creature they had seen, but he did not believe its magic could harm him. It could make illusions, but that was all and he told his men so.
What is it you think this creature can do? All it did was send dreams into waking minds,
his voice dripped with scorn. Even your dullard minds should have seen that is was just a woman with a fox mask. A simple woman sent you fleeing into the night.
He spun away from the gathered men. Well I was not fooled. She took the Lady Fumiko to the old temple on the mountain. We must go there, pull it down stone by stone if necessary.
He spun back, his eyes glaring. The Lady and the brat she carries will not come back to haunt me in the future. The kingdom is mine!
FUMIKO FOLLOWED THE fox form up the stone steps, still holding the moans inside. She knew her time was soon to be upon her and she needed to be somewhere safe. Her child must be born in safety. She continued to whisper to her companion. Fox woman, sister, bring us to safety and you may have what you wish.
She closed her eyes briefly as a pain shuddered up her frame. She knew what she was offering, knew the price of the fox's help, but she would have vengeance for her fallen lord.
The creature from the mists had reformed as a normal looking red fox. Normal in all, but its foxfire eyes that looked back at her, urging her upward. When she resumed her upward climbing it skittered up and into a doorway cleverly disguised as a cleft in a boulder.
She struggled upward, slipping back a few feet before a strong wrinkled hand caught her. She looked up into the eyes of an ancient priest. The man said not a word, but pulled her upward and gently helped her through the doorway and into the temple.
Inside the temple was much as she expected. There were some delicate hangings and incense filled the air. Fumiko took a deep breath and the pain eased back a step. Something about the incense brought a space to her grieving heart.
The priest moved to the temple altar and bent down his aged head. Murmuring almost silently, he offered up thanks for the deliverance of the lady to his hall. He then turned and gestured to her to lie down on the soft mat that lay on the floor. The lady collapsed onto it, her hands cradling her child. She closed her eyes to the next pain that racked her body and managed to stay silent.
Bending over the prone woman, the old priest ran gentle hands over her belly. Without a word, he shook his head. The lady should have been in her own bed, not running across the rocks and into the cold. The shock to her system had brought on her birth pains. Her time
