Dedication
––––––––
This book is dedicated to my brother Michael for all his help over the years
1 First Steps
––––––––
In this chapter I’m going to describe some of the benefits of Magix Photo Designer, show you how to install it, and give a short tutorial on how to use some of its most basic functions.
By the end of this chapter I hope you’ll be able to rotate, crop, caption, remove red eye, and unwanted objects using the cloning tool.
What’s Magix Photo Designer Good For?
Editing Photos of course! Magic Photo Designer provides a lot of the same functionality as software like Photoshop without having to spend very much money, and with a much easier learning curve. So you can improve your photographs of your Christmas dinner by removing Uncle Eddie’s drunken gesture.
Or you can clip, manipulate and highlight important elements of a photo. Remove smudges and red eye. Basically make yourself appear like you’re a stronger photographer than you really are!
In this book I’m going to show you how to do all of these things. So, I hope that you enjoy it, and that you will like to
Download Magix Photo Designer
First go to download.cnet.com in your browser. This will automatically detect what operating system and redirect you to a page that lets you download software for that operating system.
Once you’ve loaded the appropriate web page type Magix Photo Designer into the search bar:
And press enter. Scroll down until you see the Magix Photo Designer Link and click on download.
It may take a few seconds before the download starts. Depending on your browser you might see a prompt asking if you want to download the file. In which case click OK, yes or similar. You will see the progress of the download on the screen (this example is from Chrome):
Installing the program
When the download finishes your internet browser will notify you in the normal way. Run the program from your browser. For example in chrome you would click on the down arrow:
And then Open:
You’ll probably get an elevation prompt (a prompt asking if you want to run the installer.) Click yes. The Installer will start to run:
Once it’s done some thinking, you’ll see a prompt screen:
Click on if you’re happy with the terms.
WARNING
CNET has a nasty habit of trying to install extensions, new tools and other bloat ware that you don’t want. ALWAYS make sure that you run a custom install when installing things from CNET.
If you see a window with special offer
click decline.
Or if you see a standard installation screen with standard / custom install choose the custom install offer and make sure you remove anything that you don’t want.
CNet will download the software to your system:
This may take some time, so go get a cup of coffee if necessary!
Once the download is finished you’ll see the final stage of the CNet Download installer:
Click on .
You’ll see a progress window:
Once it’s ready it will display a welcome window
Click .
You’ll see a terms and conditions page. Click the box to accept terms and conditions:
Click .
Settings
I think it’s generally best to use the Standard Settings. If you use custom settings you can control some of the fine details of how the program is installed but the standard settings is often perfectly adequate.
Using Standard Settings
To use the Standard Settings keep its option selected
And click
Using Custom Settings
Click on the circle next to custom:
And click
You’ll see a location where you can change the installation directory
Click on .
This will display a choose destination directory
. Go to the directory you want the program installed in. Remember that you can also create a new directory (in windows right click and select New->Folder)
This dialogue works in the normal way for your platform.
Double Click on the folder you want to install the program to then click .
You’ll see the directory listed in the Program Files text box:
You can still change your name by clicking again or if you want to go back to the standard settings. But if you’re happy with your choices you can click on .
You’ll see a dialogue asking if you want to add a shortcut for Magix. As a rule you should leave this setting alone unless you’ve already installed the program before in which case you may not want to install the shortcut.
Uncheck the option if you don’t want to create the shortcut:
Then click .
Final Installation screen
You’re now at the final installation screen. You can choose to go back to change any options, or run the installation.
Click to install the program, or or if you want to change your settings or not install after all.
You’ll see a progress dialogue appear
It’s pretty quick normally so you might not get a chance for another cup of coffee, but you can always try.
Once it’s done, click .
Unusually, you don’t have the option of starting it immediately, so to start it go to the desktop and double click on its icon:
You’ll see a splash screen while Magix Photo Designer Loads:
If you’ve downloaded the trial version click
Activating the Product
While Magix Photo Designer is free, you do have to register it. In the welcome window, click on Register
Which will open up a browser window.
Assuming you don’t have a Magix login you will use the default setting
And then click .
You’ll be asked for some details. Once you’ve filled in the form and decided if you want to get the email newsletter and use any of the other Magix products, click on .
You’ll have to check your email to get the registration code. If after a few minutes you don’t see the email with the activation code check your
