Saving a Buck (Inside Story 11)

About this ebook
When a trouble-maker visited a story called The Secret Garden, I went to investigate. My name’s Jam Rodger. I have an incorporator, which can take me to (old) stories, and it’s my job to stop people from damaging those stories. Hiding, I overheard Abanazar, the cruel villain from Aladdin, persuading Mary Lennox, the little girl from The Secret Garden, to rescue Buck, the dog from The Call of the Wild. Abanazar spotted me, and took my incorporator so I couldn’t go home. Then Mary forced me to help her to rescue Buck. I’d need a lot of skill – and a bit of luck – to save these stories from total ruin.

I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

SAVING A BUCK
1
It was a garden. I didn’t know why it was called a secret garden, but it was definitely a garden. A big garden, more like a jungle, with trees, bushes, and flowers jostling each other, climbing over each other, and invading the path that wound through it all.
The sun was beating down from a blue sky. The tops of the trees were rustling in the breeze, but the garden was warm and still, and thick with the sweet smell of the flowers.
I slipped my incorporator into my pocket and listened. Loads of birds were cheeping, and loads of bees were buzzing, but I couldn’t hear anything that might be human.
I crept along the path, ducking under a spiky branch and squeezing past a big clump of purple flowers that were spreading over the path.
I soon guessed why the garden was so warm and still: it was surrounded by a high wall, usually hard to see behind the bushes, trees and plants that climbed all over it.
What should I do? As usual, the mission was urgent. Sherlock Holmes hadn’t had time to explain the problem. He said, Go,
and I went. Should I hide or should I…?
A scraping noise, somewhere near. It might be somebody poking a big key in a big lock. That figured: if this was a secret garden, it would be locked.
Clunk. The key turned in the lock.
Should I face the person? No: I would hide and watch for a while. But I had to find somewhere quickly.
I was standing on rough grass in front of a shallow arch which was covered in pink roses. It had a bench seat across the back, with a brown rug, neatly folded, at one end. I backed into the corner between the arch and the wall, behind the roses.
The door creaked again, and shut with a thud. The lock went clunk. Footsteps came along the path towards me, sometimes loud on the bare stone, and sometimes muffled on moss.
And I realised I wasn’t properly hidden. I sprinted over the grass and the path, and dived behind a thick bush. Through gaps between the leaves, I could watch the arch.
A little girl appeared there. She was wearing a blue dress dotted with clumps of white flowers, and she was carrying a big grey book. She spread the rug across the seat, and sat there, staring in my direction. I thought I was hidden, but I daren’t move: she would certainly spot that.
Frowning, she dumped the book on the seat and walked towards me. She stopped in front of my bush and, with her hands on her hips and her eyes gleaming, demanded, What are you doing there?
2
I pushed out of the bush. I… I came to see you.
Hiding in there: that seems a strange way of seeing me. What is your name?
James. James Rodger, but my friends call me Jam.
How old are you, James?
Twelve.
How did you get in here? The gate was locked.
It’s a long story.
This is a secret garden, a secret between me and Dickon and Colin, yet I find you in it, trying to hide. You must explain what you are doing here.
Yeah. I want to explain.
Then you may do so. Come.
She headed for the arch.
I followed her. What’s your name?
Mary Lennox. I’m ten.
I’m a Guardian. I….
A Guardian. What do you guard?
I guard stories. If….
Stories? How can you guard stories?
I have an incorporator.
I showed it to her. It looks like a grey e-book reader. The screen showed:
Title: The Secret Garden
Author: Frances Hodgson Burnett
Edition: 1985
Page: 185.
A what?
She held out her hand for it.
An incorporator.
I let her take it. It lets me go to any story.
Story? Why do you keep saying ‘story’?
"Back home, I could read about you in that story – The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The incorporator lets me go into that story."
I am not part of a story.
She gave me the incorporator and sat on the bench in the arch.
I sat beside her. I know how you feel. It’s hard….
Are you in a story?
I don’t know. Like you, I don’t feel like it. I’ve stopped worrying about it. I feel like a person, and that’s all that matters to me. Sherlock Holmes sent….
Sherlock Holmes! Do you know Sherlock Holmes?
Yes. He’s the Chief Guardian. He sent….
He’s in a story. I forgot for a moment.
It’s confusing. He’s the Chief Guardian. His instruments detected that somebody visited this story without permission. He sent….
Someone visited here?
She stared at me.
Yeah. Have you seen anybody?
Wait. Let me think.
She frowned for a few seconds, then went on, Yes. I can tell you. I found a man here – in the garden – last week. We talked. I said I would tell Colin and Dickon that I had met him, but he made me promise not to do so. I haven’t told them. But he didn’t make me promise not to tell anyone else.
So you can tell me.
Y…yes. If you ask.
What did he look like?
He was a big black man, but he was dressed like the servants in the Hall here.
Yeah. When you use an incorporator, it changes your clothes to suit the story.
I held my arms wide, to show my scruffy brown shirt, patched blue breeches and heavy black shoes. What did he say to you?
He bowed, assuring me that he was my friend, but he evaded answering my questions. I was not sure if I should trust him.
Did he want you to do anything?
"Yes. He asked me if I knew a story called The Call of the Wild, by Jack London."
Did you?
No, but there is a library in the Hall here. I found it there and brought it.
She tapped the book, on the seat beside
