What Are Sea Mammals?
What’s that huge, dark shape moving through the water? Suddenly, an orca leaps out of the sea, twists around, and splashes back into the water.
An orca, or killer whale, might look like a large fish, but it is a sea mammal. Mammals have a backbone, fur or hair on their bodies, and use lungs to breathe. They give birth to live young, and mothers feed their babies milk. Does this description sound familiar? It should—humans are also mammals.
Sea mammals live and feed in the sea. There are four groups: whales and dolphins; seals, sea lions, and walruses; manatees and dugongs; and sea otters and polar bears. They are all excellent swimmers and divers. They are also known as marine mammals. Marine means of the sea.
These sea lions watch carefully as orcas swim in the shallow water. Orcas are predators that hunt sea lions.
Meet the sea mammals
There are around 130 different types, or species, of sea mammal. They have adapted in different ways to live in the sea:
