GETTING STARTED WITH PHOTOSHOP
Photoshop is the industry standard tool for image editing, and with good reason. It is powerful, flexible, and has evolved over many years to include all of the features that you need to edit images for both print and the web. Photoshop is easily extensible, with a huge number of filters, effects and plugins available to help to speed up common tasks.
MASTERING THE INTERFACE
Before you can get started with Photoshop, the first thing that you should do is learn your way around the software. The Photoshop interface can be confusing at first, but it is very flexible and you can configure it to suit your needs. You can break the interface up into panels, and show only the panels that you need. You can even pre-define different layouts for different tasks and switch between them at will.
Managing Panels
Panels are the elements that make up the broader Photoshop interface. Most of the work that you do inside Photoshop will involve panels. There are panels for layers, adjustments, colors and textures, channels and even your edit history. The sheer number of channels available might be overwhelming at first. That’s why it’s a good idea to learn your way around the user interface and familiarize yourself with each feature before you start working through more complex tutorials. It may not seem like the most exciting thing to do, but it will make life a lot easier in the long run.
Before you begin, let’s make sure that you are starting from the default settings. If you have experimented with Photoshop before you might have made some changes to the panels and the layout, and this can make following tutorials a little confusing. The working environment in Photoshop is called a workspace. The default workspace is a good starting point for inexperienced users. You can add or remove panels and reposition them, then save the workspace so that Photoshop knows how it should have the panels laid out the next time you run it.
Make sure that you are running the default workspace by looking at the top right-hand corner of the Photoshop user interface, just below the minimize, maximize and close buttons. There is a workspace selection box there. This box is not labeled so it is easy to overlook. If you are using the default layout the box should say Essentials. If it says anything else, then change the drop-down to say Essentials so that you are using a standard layout.
If may take a few seconds for the interface to update depending on the performance of your computer. You may see some panels open or close, and some move around. To confirm that you are really using the default layout, click on
