RSVP Murder - Shantnu Tiwari
Many years ago, when Detective Royce was travelling in India, he found himself in the unfortunate position of being dead. Murdered, to be precise.
But he made a contract with the Goddess of Death, which allowed him to return. This contract is what drives him now.
Because he supposedly fails every single case he takes on, he’s known as the Defeated Detective.
Chapter 1
The cold hard ground suffocated me. I tried to move but the solid soil had paralysed my arms. I tried to breathe but only got dirt in my mouth.
Boy, being buried alive was no fun.
The darkness was complete. Not a single ray of light, not a single hopeful source of illumination. This was as dark as it got. The darkness only the dead saw. And those of us unlucky (or stupid) enough to be buried alive.
There was no light, but there was sound. I could hear a dull humming, which repeated at regular intervals. The sound of underground pipes, or maybe an underground civilisation of dwarves running a factory. Who knows?
The dirt in my mouth was very salty. Why was this ground so full of salt? I mean, I had never been buried alive, so I didn't know what dirt tasted like. But I’m sure it wasn’t supposed to be this salty. Maybe some of the salt from the road construction company had leaked and made its way to the graveyard. If so, I’d have to complain. We can’t have these corrupt building companies polluting our graveyards. Not unless we had a zombie problem. Maybe not even then.
These corrupt building companies were the reason I was in the ground in the first place. I hadn’t even been paid for the case I had taken. I mean, I had barely agreed to meet my client, and the next second you know, I’m in the ground, thinking all these thoughts. I really need to get out of here.
I hope they buried me upright. It would be really embarrassing if I started digging up and ended up in China or someplace.
