    INTRODUCTION

    THE FORGOTTEN IDEAL

We need to know that the current state of the world is the product of leadership throughout history, and we must know that it is not improving. Our global –corporate, national and community conditions are simply proof that the nature, quality and characteristics of leadership mankind has produced over the years have not served us well. A vacuum exists –character.

Our preferences have changed. There is a wide range of interest, that, I understand, at least this is remarkably noticeable since the emergence of the last century through now. But what the world fails to know is that principles don’t change. Processes may, but certainly not principles. Integrity, honesty, discipline, hard work, diligence, humility, attitude, character these are principles that must not change!

As the global community shifts its attention from quality to quantity; there is also a grafted shift from principles to productivity, and skill becomes king. You need to be skilful in this case to get the job; so go to school, accumulate skills and get the job after graduation, this is what industries want. But if you really want to make an indelible mark on earth, you certainly need more than skills. Of course, industries or organizations don’t need morons to fill up vacancies. But skills can be developed over night unlike character that has formed the basic identity and perception of that person. Perception matters a lot in leadership and influence. Human dignity fades, leadership becomes ineffective and the consequences mount with time –millions of people across the globe lose their lives and economic sabotage becomes the order of the day.

In 2008 alone, over 30 million people were forced out of their jobs globally. The far-reaching impact of job-loss and unemployment cannot be minced in simple words. Several research institutes across the globe have estimated the consequences of economic recession on several platforms and had taken social crimes and family breakdowns as their focal points which are believed to be the consequences of mental breakdown. All of these impact are too large to be repaired or forgotten in a lifetime. However, if our society –corporate and political organizations will be interested in scrutinizing people based on character as foundation and then secondarily focus on skills needed, the world will become a better place to be.

CHARACTER ETHICS AND PERSONALITY ETHICS –the misunderstanding!

As I began my research, deeply immersed for over seven years in studying character, influence and the abrupt shift to personality consciousness, I discovered that from the twentieth century till now, most literatures and success books are quite superficial. They often emphasize a number of things in common –wealth creation, becoming a millionaire in one day, how I retired at 20, success books which misunderstand and misinterpret the concept of success entirely and how to be famous and getting to be liked by others.

Peter F. Drucker, a management consultant rightly puts it this way "Leadership is not magnetic personality; that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not ‘making friends and influence people;’ that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations."

No doubt, this literatures are most selling in our days and had created unprecedented influence in our generation and the past one, but they had not helped us much. The teachings about social image consciousness, techniques and quick fixes with social Band-Aids and aspirin that addresses acute problems and sometimes even appears to solve them temporarily, but leaves the underlying chunk of chronic problems untouched to fester and resurface time and again.

Character principle teaches that there are basic principles of living and that people can only experience true success and lasting happiness as they learn to integrate these principles into their basic life and then
