For obvious reasons, the names and locations have been changed. Although these things need to be kept hidden for practical purposes, the story is, and of itself, one hundred per cent true. The Bellings Town Fairy
Told for the Truth
by James R. Bigelow
I realize that the very strange story you are about to read may bother you and in some cases, shock you. I realize that there are things in this book that make no sense at all. I realize that most men will call me a liar. So be it. This is a story that, in many ways, must be told, and in very many other ways, should not be told at all.
This story is true. For obvious reasons, the names and locations have been changed. Although these things need to be kept hidden for practical purposes, the story is, and of itself, one hundred per cent true. Not one event depicted herein was fabricated. I have chosen the name, James Bigelow, out of the top of my head. Bellings Town does not exist; at least, not in Southern California, where these events actually happened. Those who live in Southern California may be able to determine where these events occurred, simply by figuring, or trying to figure out, the landscape and the area described. It is possible, because I can not hide some of these things due to the events surrounding and happening there. This story is not given to you in order for the writer to make a ton of money. This story is written so that, after I have lived my long and fruitful life, I can share with those whose desires it is to know that such a thing as a fairy does exist.
They exist, not only in legend and folklore, and in the imaginations of movie producers and young children, but right here among us. They may exist on your property, or somewhere nearby. I know they do. The reason I know is because, for a few fearless moments, I held one in my hands.
I know that the scenario is difficult to believe, and I am aware that people will ridicule the idea of it, whether it be out of disbelief or jealousy. I have kept this secret with me for thirty years, sharing it only with a very few others whom I trusted.
Chapter One
The House
My wife and I stood in the small front lawn of an extremely strange house. We had been looking for a house that suited us. We were planning to have a family, and pretty soon, so, we were looking for something where we could expand, add on to, or simply find a good-seized house that could be slightly redone to allow for more people.. There was something about this house. It was big, but not in the standard way. There was something about it, something in the air that was quite undefinable. I liked the place. It was a three story house; the very top floor was basically an old attic that had been carpeted and partitioned into several large rooms. It sat atop a hill. There was another hill above it, as the back of the lot dipped down and rose up again right after that.
There was a small stairway leading upstairs. The opening to the upstairs area was just a hole in the ceiling. It wasn't fancy at all. At the top of the stairs, there was no hand hold --- there was nothing there.
The bottom floor was almost, but not quite, a basement. It was one large room that had been used as something before. We didn't plan to use it. It was blocked off from the rest of the house, and if we bought the place, we would keep it blocked off and keep the doorway locked. We could open it very easily from the sun room in the house. As we stood there, the sun room was on the second floor. The steps leading into the house, right in front of us, led to the second floor.
It was an unusual house, built in 1938, into the side of a hill in southern Los Angeles County. Whoever had built the house had excavated some solid rock and a lot of the hill, and stuck this huge house into the hill. The master bedroom, which was on the second floor, led into the back yard. It was level with the back yard.
