PREFACE
College! Can you believe what some call the most exciting years of your life have arrived? For many of you, it is the start of adulthood. You have the responsibility and power to shape your destiny. Let’s be real. This is one of the most important chapters of your life, which directly impacts your future. Many people unfortunately don’t realize this until it is too late, and inevitably waste their college experience.
We, Emeka and Carrie, both graduated from college Summa Cum Laude, were heavily involved with extracurricular activities (including holding leadership positions and mentorship roles), and worked part time jobs, while thoroughly enjoying every moment of our college lives. In this book, we will be your personal mentors and share with you college fundamentals, personal examples, and specific tips for achieving all that you can during your years of college. If you follow them, we guarantee it will help you accomplish your goals, get the most out of college, and ultimately ACE the undergrad!
Use this book by first selecting your mentor. We both have very different personalities, strengths, experiences, and work habits. We were able to ace the undergrad in our own unique ways. You can choose to read the book from the perspective of the mentor whose personality you identify with more. Or, you can choose both mentors to help you see differing perspectives on how to incorporate the same necessary skills into your college lives. When you have chosen your mentor, the chapters begin.
Each chapter gives you an overview of a specific skill, or college fundamental, that you must master in order to become a successful college student. Following the overviews, we help guide you through your college experience by providing concrete personal examples of how we actually came to mastering the skills, and how mastering them greatly impacted our college lives. Then, in the last part of every chapter, you will receive practical tips on how you can apply these skills to your college experience.
In our opinion, the vast majority of self-help books focus only on empowering and motivating the reader to achieve a particular goal. Yes, it is great to be encouraged, but that encouragement will always be short-lived if not supported by practical steps to reach the goal. We wanted to not only tell you what needs to be done, but also to explicitly demonstrate how it can be done. We believe in these ten college fundamentals wholeheartedly, as we have personally experienced the results of having used each of them. Also, we have seen what happens when students do not apply these
