This book is dedicated to my family.

Thank you for letting me be me.

    I love you all!

This book is the result of a vision God put in my head more than twenty years ago. I am humbled that He would use me to share His thoughts with you and thankful He gave me the time and courage to make this book a reality.

My family has shaped who I am today and are the greatest source of joy and fulfillment in my life. I am forever thankful for the contributions my wife, Lori and our children, Christina, Dominique and Joshua have made (known and unknown) to the creation of this book. Likewise, this book reflects many thoughts formed through many teachings and interactions with my parents, Roger and Pat Bate, my brothers and sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews. You all know who you are! Know that I cherish our time together and see God at work in you all every time we get together.

Thank you to my many Christian Friends and Mentors, namely Rich Schmucker, Marv Schmucker, Neil Stewart, Roger Hampton and the countless others who are walking with me on our Christian journeys here on earth. You all are my go to people I approach as sounding boards and mentors to check my current direction. I fish for direction often and at very unorthodox times and you all never disappoint!

To my many Business Mentors, too many to name, thank you for the countless hours of coaching, direction and opportunities you have graced me with. From my early days in college at the University of Texas to my days at Conoco and DuPont up through my executive roles at MasterBrands and within Private Equity businesses, you have all openly shared with me your experience, insight and passion required to deliver success in business.

Finally, I must acknowledge you, the reader, as you seek success in your career but more importantly success eternally through your Christian development. Thank you for following through with whatever compelled you to purchase this book. This book is truly a gift from God to you. I am simple the conduit of God’s message to you.

    Enjoy!

    Foreword

I have no fancy author or titan of business to craft an eloquent forward pitching this book. In fact, I am a first time author writing this book in advance of any guarantees it will be published or even see the light of day. Much like you, I am a sinner who has made many mistakes in life and in business and no doubt will make more in the future. However, at the relatively young age of forty-eight years old I have been blessed with a good education (undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and MBA from Houston Baptist University) and twenty-five years of leadership experience at four different companies (three Fortune-Fifty Corporations and one Private Equity owned company) including the last fifteen years in executive roles varying from Vice President, Senior Vice President to President and CEO. More importantly, I have progressed on a purposeful journey in my own spiritual development as a Christian that I suspect is very similar to the one you are on right now.

My sole objective in writing Lessons from the Fast Track is to take a pause from my career to share with you the core lessons I have learned so far that have made a difference in my business performance and who I have developed into as a person. My hope is you will find a gem or two you can use along your own progression on the fast track of business and of life. Enjoy!
