Don’t panic! We’re not the first city in the world to run out of water – the huge Brazilian megacity of São Paulo endured grim months of little or no water between 2015 and 2016. We’re not even the first South African town to do so: that privilege belongs to Phuthaditjhaba, which ran dry in October 2015 and had to rely on water tankers for months. And Johannesburg had a near-miss two years ago, saved by good rains and the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. But Cape Town is the most visible – the first major world tourist destination to do so.
