A Rich Man's Second Chance - Arielle Pomeroy

    Chapter One

THE FIRST CLASS TICKET was her ticket home. Daphne Mitchell didn’t believe in taking chances. If the plane was going to crash, something in her mind told her that first class passengers had a better chance than those in the general cabin where people were squashed in like sardines and didn’t really have room to move around. She feared plane journeys and did everything possible to take her mind off the fact that the plane was in the air. The extra cost of the first class ticket was always worth it. Instead of having her seat kicked by kids, or having to endure sitting next to inquisitive strangers, she found that the people who travelled first class were usually polite and sufficiently distant, so that she didn’t have to tell them her life story or listen to theirs.

Boarding ticket please, said the woman at the boarding gate and she quickly handed her the ticket and was directed toward the plane.

Daphne hoped the flight wouldn’t be subjected to bad weather, although it had been forecast. She had to get home. The city eats at your soul and, right now, the thought of sitting in her small house beside the fire was about as tempting a thought as Daphne could think of. Of course, there were always the negative points about going home, but she knew that the privacy of her own home offered her more than hotel rooms and restaurants ever could.

What’s the matter with you? her father had nagged before she left.

Why can’t you see that you could do worse than being married to Chris?

They had been engaged for two years, and although it was accepted by everyone in her circle that one day Daphne and Chris would marry, a nagging doubt in the back of her mind had stepped in and called a halt to the farce. She wasn’t ready for marriage and babies. She wasn’t ready to give up on being Daphne Mitchell. She wasn’t ready to be owned and Chris made her feel like his property. All of her hopes and dreams would have been quashed had she said, yes to Chris. She wasn’t even sure of her feelings, though there had been a huge gap in her life when she told him that she didn’t want to marry him – at least not yet. What she hadn’t foreseen was the fact that Chris was not willing to wait until she was ready. When he called it quits, there was a feeling of disappointment and heartbreak, but he hadn’t taken account of her needs – only his – and perhaps it was just as well that he had put an end to it.

Gazing out of the window of the plane, the clouds didn’t look that threatening. They were a little grey but the sunshine poured from the autumn sky and lit up the edges of the clouds like a reminder of something very precious to Daphne. When she had been 21 years old, her mother had passed away and she had asked for a message from God that her mother was safe. The sparkling of the edge of the clouds was what followed and, although she was older now, she still believed that magic behind the natural environment of a cloud tinged with gold. She smiled to herself as she looked at it. Yes, soon she would be home and had a wedding to go to. It was going to be awkward at best but she knew Lucy would never forgive her for not going.

    Chapter Two

EXCUSE ME, SAID THE masculine voice that seemed to soar above her. He was tall and rather handsome and thoughtlessly, she had placed her laptop on his seat. This appears to be my seat he smiled and Daphne moved the computer quickly and stacked it away on the floor by her legs.

I am so sorry. That was thoughtless of me she apologized, and saw the dimple in his chin as he smiled back at her. His hair was dark and his brown eyes looked almost sympathetically toward her, although sympathy was the last thing in her mind at that moment. Yes, indeed. He was a good looking guy. She was happy to be in his company instead of sitting next to a stranger with a need to open up every nook and cranny of his/her personal life to her. Daphne seemed to attract people like that. She wasn’t sure why but perhaps it was her empathetic nature that attracted them. She smiled smugly to herself as she adjusted her belongings and watched him take the seat beside her.

If we are going to be sitting next to each other, we should at least introduce ourselves. he said, and held out his hand to shake hers. His skin was soft, meaning that he wasn’t a laborer or someone accustomed to hard graft, but his eyes told her that he was a very deep person – someone on a mission that was quite important. The cut of his suit also gave away that he wasn’t poor. In fact, the way that his jacket was cut, it showed his large shoulders and when he took it off and folded it, his shirt revealed a very attractive body indeed with an aroma that was refreshingly unique – perhaps expensive aftershave or even body lotion.

My name is Marcus Warner, he said with a voice of authority. It wasn’t the kind of voice that irritates or that enjoys listening to itself. It was warm and friendly. Daphne looked into his brown eyes and knew instantly that he was perhaps as empathetic as she was, and maybe it was her turn to simply relax in the company of someone who was open to listening.

My name is Daphne Mitchell, she said.

Not the Daphne Mitchell? he asked with a surprised look on his face. That took her aback. She didn’t know there was another Daphne Mitchell.

I doubt it, she replied. Just plain and simple Daphne. She smiled at the guy and his face showed that he had been joking.

    "I wouldn’t agree
