BRIAN MORTON is the author of four previous novels, including Starting Out in the Evening, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and was made into an acclaimed feature film, and A Window Across the River, which was a Book Club selection of the Today show. He teaches at New York University, the Bennington Writing Seminars, and Sarah Lawrence College, where he also directs the writing program. He lives in New York.

Introduction
When I was growing up, the pager was the most popular wireless telecommunication device that was out on the market. That was until the cellphone came out to replace it. I know what you’re thinking. Were computers out then too? Yes, they were, but they were not as affordable for everyone to own. If I really needed to use a computer, I would have to go to school or to my local library to use it. Without having access to a computer, I could not work on my essays and research papers until we went to the computer lab some time that week.
Besides going to school, I grew up in a predominately Latino neighborhood. The language of choice was mostly Spanish. And if my neighbors said something to me, good or bad, I had no way of knowing what they said unless someone translated it for me, or I looked it up in a Spanish-English dictionary. Being the only biracial kid in a predominately Latino neighborhood meant that my neighbors could say anything that they wanted to me because I did not know Spanish. I was called names like chupacabras goat sucker
and negrito little black person

Aside from the name calling, some of my first Spanish lessons came from my neighbors. Similar to anyone who may have learned Spanish from a neighbor, the first words that you are going to learn are the bad ones. We also played a game that was called Loteria or lottery.
