      No, not again, I said to myself.

      Daniel smiled at me when he entered the room behind Mr. Wickenhauser. There was a strap hanging out of Mr. Wickenhauser's hand. It looked like a tongue.

      Sister Bernadette instructed us to put down our pens. We had been practising calligraphy with straight pens. I was pleased how my work was without blots.

      I had known Daniel since he'd come to the school in grade three. He was from Quebec and couldn't speak English. He was designated a slow learner. In one year he learned English. No one else knew French.

      Daniel was always getting into trouble. He was the chief victim of the 'dare'. Dare Daniel to do something and he would do it. And then brag about it. And then get caught. This time he apparently threw his strait pin across the room into an information board on the opposite wall.

      Bull's eye, he had cried out.

      Sister Bernadette crossed her arms, with her arms up each sleeve of her habit.

      I glanced at Mr. Wickenhauser. He was one of the ugliest men I had ever seen. Slick black hair, beady olive eyes and an Adam's apple that suck out of his throat like a hat rack.

      Daniel put out his hand.

      Mr. Wickenhauser swung at his hand with his belt. The smack brought tears to my eyes. I looked away.

      Kimberly, Sister Bernadette cried.

      Yes, sister, I replied.

      "You will not look away. You will watch Daniel receive
