About this ebook

I had a vision about the meaning of life, but it came with a warning. I realize this is probably more than you bargained for, but no matter the fragility of the world, I will share my meager blessings with you if I can.

    There is nothing more wondrous,

    nor more mournful,

    than the passage of time.

This is not a record of what I did, but rather how I lived. It was my manner that informed the actions of my life, which brought bountiful contentment and a friendly reputation. My hope is that these words will come to embody the work that I have done. I tell you this, to the best of my ability, to promote your own future happiness and limit the risk of tragedy.

I do not craft esoteric meaning, or at least that is not my intention. I prefer to deal with life directly. I also do not write simply to make you feel something. Emotions can be fleeting experiences, the response of which can be misguided or misled by deceptions both internal and external. What I create here is meant to inspire you to do the same; to build, to improve, and to ignore the distractions that would cause you to abandon your fruitful labors.

I want the best for you, so I offer my thoughts freely. If the world becomes a more peaceful and pleasant place, then my work shall be justly compensated. I think there is something meaningful in here for everyone, and if not now then later. I want you to find your happiness and peace as much as I did for myself. I say these things not to scornfully judge whatever your current state may be, but to offer you the same joyful encouragements I found in the reflections recorded by those who wrote before us. Ponder these words, but do not preach them. If you force them upon those who are not ready to listen, the lessons become a dogmatic intrusion to the natural progression of foundational thought; a chore rather than a pleasure. Then you will lose the student forever.

First, people must see the effect of good philosophy manifest in your own life, and realize that goodness is a prosperity worthy of being emulated. Without fidelity of practice, you yourself may still be a student of your own thoughts. Others can then begin the path to understanding, which they must do in their own time for the lessons to take root. Enlightenment is made of inspiration, not compulsion. It can be born of privilege and paucity alike, so long as the only outcome is the attainment of peace. I believe that there is peace out there for everyone, and I believe you will find yours.

With these words I will spend all the energy I have to recommend you to a life of contentment. I do this for the sake of your own happiness and the endurance of our kind, lately agreed upon to be in jeopardy. To survive, both as a species and a society, communication is the key to flourishing. The most important mechanism of our evolution is the ability to explain and explore every abstract notion that cannot be satisfied in the blandest terms. For this task, I believe we ought to implement the full breadth of our infinitely-hued palette of speech, instead of relying solely upon the efficiency of what is easy and familiar.

Knowledge becomes an addiction, which can never be satiated once we are enticed by the prospect of understanding something that we previously assumed was outside our natural reach. This discussion should not be a challenge to your lifestyle, but rather a thoughtful and respectful presentation of suggestions for enhancing your wellbeing. Of course, I leave all my words entirely at your discretion and good judgement. Consider them and do what you think is right.

The record I have left here is the accumulation of a lifetime of thought and sight. My exhaustive commitment to cataloguing and deciphering my mind has compelled me to explain exactly what I am about. The documentation of personal philosophies is essential, for instead of saying something easy to appease the present company, we write to attract better future company. This forces attention upon our inconsistencies, misjudgments, and improvements. Recently, my beloved labor has become increasingly redundant, having survived as many proofs as I could construct to barricade myself against hypocrisy, or at least ethical idleness.

Innovative processes seem to slow and consolidate with age, and therefore life exhibits smaller changes as you polish what beliefs survived the flames of disputation. After a certain age you begin to maintain the order of your mind. So, now it appears to be time to audit the anthology of my prior works, and stitch together the varied essays into a cohesive volume for the benefit of anyone who might be able to put it to good use. Once I have nothing left to say, God will take me along to make way for other thinkers. If any besides myself are reading this, then my writings were preserved for more than the sake of the posterity of one man.

Much like everyone, so many different spirits have tried to influence me throughout my life, revealing ages of antecedent knowledge. Never, however, could I believe that what wisdom was conjured in separate times and places, was not
