Hey there, Writer!
Thank you for your interest in my start-up guide, Your Write Spark.
The purpose of Your Write Spark is to help you get started on your story idea and stay committed so that you have the tools and know-how and confidence to COMPLETE your first draft in a time frame that’s right for you! Over the course of thirty mini-lessons that take you through the fundamentals of the craft and your writer self, you’ll learn about genre, plot, character arcs, world-building, writer’s block, and much more to help you begin laying out the foundation of your story.
Each mini-lesson will contain guidance to help you propel your ideas from your imagination to notes that will ultimately help you form a rough draft.
Your Write Spark is designed for anyone who is interested in starting or developing a story, feeling stuck on what to do next, finishing a rough draft, or who is having trouble staying committed to a project for any reason.
The lessons build on each other, so if you’re a linear thinker you’ll find it useful to follow the lessons sequentially. However, if this isn’t your first rodeo then you may find it more helpful to study the lessons that align with a current struggle or question. There is no right
way to follow this guide, so do what feels best to you.
When you’ve completed the lessons, you’ll have learned a whole pack-worth of tips and guidelines that will prove that YOU are a WRITER and that will encourage you to stay committed to your project and finish your draft.
I am really excited to join you on your writing adventure.
Let’s hop to it!
Getting Started
Many budding writers worry about whether they’re on the right track because even though they’d dabbled with writing since they were children or adolescents, often they aren’t felt pulled to write more seriously until later down the road. Many times novels are started yet set aside due to life or family situations. They usually feel excited and hopeful at the prospect of writing but easily become waylaid by external interferences such as a job, raising kids, or financial issues. It isn’t unusual for writers who are just starting out to not have much of a support system and end up feeling alone in their journey.
Any of the above sound familiar?
First off, it’s important to keep in mind that as long as you’re following up on your desire to write (like, reading this book) then you’re on the right track. Hitting obstacles along the way, such as having trouble finishing novels, is part of the process and totally normal. We all have partial manuscripts lying around for various reasons, so no writer is alone in that!
Life interruptions can be tough to wrangle, but you can get control of your writing time + space if you truly want that. Yes, it might take a bit of refocusing and shifting some things around but it's totally possible.
My first big tip for any writer at any stage in their journey is to be sure you don't feel guilty or selfish for writing instead of household chores or family or maintaining a social life.
Creativity is a natural part of you, and it deserves attention and nurturing just like all other aspects of your life. You need to feed your creative self just like you need to feed your physical self. The sooner you honor writing as part of your whole being (and not just a hobby or something that isn't as important as other things), the faster you'll be able to build a creative practice that totally fits your real-world schedule.
My next big tip—assuming time management is difficult—is to try to find 15 minutes in your day to devote to your writing. It's there, I promise! You may have to shift some other things around, or you may have to make a sacrifice or two, but as long as you want to write, then you have the time to write.
Once you establish yourself in daily 15-minute writing sessions, you can slowly expand those sessions to 30, 45, and then 60 minutes and longer. Of course there will be days here and there that you can't get more than 15 minutes in, and that's okay. Don't
