    Dedication

The question came to me in the initial stages of this project as to the reason why I might be thinking as I am and what could have influenced me to even perceive the idea of writing this book. I always wanted to write but somehow thought it would be impossible. Today impossibility in my opinion depends on the mind-set of a person. The analytical person I have become has led me to understand that my perception of life has been as a result of my being blessed with a wealth of wonderful elders throughout the early developmental years of my life.

There is however, one of those seniors who had been exceptional to me. Her words of wisdom drawn from Jamaican proverbs and biblical text, account for the level of understanding I possess. There is never a day since her passing away that I do not hear her voice ushering me through the day, reminding me that manners will take me through endless destinations and to speak the truth uncompromisingly.

Like never before I can see her, hear her, as the infinite memories continue to mould me into aspired perfection. For these causes I respectfully dedicate this work in honour of my beloved grandmother, Birdie Isolyn Farquharson-Reid (1914 – 2001).

    Acknowledgement

I would like to sincerely recognize the following persons for their contribution in making this project a success: Ms. Jeanette Campbell (English Lecturer) and Ms. Sharon Hare (Guidance Counsellor), for their invaluable editorial ideas. Mrs. Jacqueline Taylor-Brown, who encouraged me to share my thoughts with the public. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Special Thanks

I cannot express enough, the sincere gratitude that my heart wants to give to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, for granting me His wisdom to realize this goal. To my cousins Odette Daley-Jeffery and Shane Wilson for their support and my beloved mother Heather Winnifred Barrett – Edwards for her encouragement even in the last moments of her journey from this life. May her soul rest in peace.

    Preface

As long as man exists there will be the need for education, enlightenment, argument and guidance, for the complete man is an amalgamation of these ingredients. The issues about to be unfolded are intended to make clear to its readers, the importance of the little things we take for granted.

To educate is more than merely sharing knowledge, it is about presenting individuals with challenges, also an appreciation of the beauty and all observable behaviours of things within an environment. These will shape his thoughts, emotions, humility and personality.

Human beings are curious creations but often, not curious enough as very important details are allowed to pass un-noticed on many occasions. Enlightenment now becomes a factor as the over- sighted elements (little things) might just turn out to be massive strongholds or successes, and the way forward is through knowledge of their existence and impact.

Speaking of the little things and their impression on life may unearth many debates, and in turn, another crucial element of our livelihood, which is called argument. It is through argument that many findings are gathered, good decisions made and goals reached. Most definitely, argument has a down side that may bring about enmity between the various social groups but that is where the beauty lies; when we are able to see beyond our own judgement, embrace the views of others and make a positive evaluation of both sides which in turn will help us to make productive decisions.

With the three components discussed previously, a man may seem complete and competent, but could it be that he might just turn out to be a liability to society rather than an asset? Indeed, it is good to have power, but without set codes of conduct, in other words, guidelines, this power will be abused. Perhaps guidance is the most important attribute that we could ever have because humans are not omniscient; hence, we need directions, as to how to do something or to reach somewhere. This book is aimed at touching all these areas of a person’s life.

The information to be shared is designed to promote thinking where readers are concerned, as mentioned before, education through challenges, appreciation and observance of diverse behaviours. The contents will be based on the explanation of a number of philosophies developed by the author and will serve as a good source of motivation.

The thoughts presented should not be taken lightly as they all derive from observation and dialogue with various groups in both formal and informal settings. There will be materials to suit all people, as the intention is to empower, sensitize and foster good decision making for the improvement of our standard of living.

    Special Notice

The asterisk (*) at the end of a word(s) denotes that such word(s) is/are used in a different context or has been created to suit the purpose of this project. Their definitions are recorded in the glossary provided after the conclusion of this book. I addition, there are instances where Jamaican patois is used. These are usually explained in foot notes of the same page.
