    About the Author

    The Aether's Guard

As I approached the door of the great hall my heart soared. I made it. I opened the door and stepped through. It was larger than I had thought it would be. Torches lit up the whole hall, a long table stretched across one side of the room covered in different dishes of foods and pitchers some of which looked very strange. On the other side of the room there was an open area with a small archway which led to a hall lit with a strange light.

A voice sounded to my left, You here with a problem?

I turned to see a man in shining blue armor with silver bands across the breastplate. No, I'm here to join the guild.

Ah. I see, came the response through the full plate helmet. You will want to talk to Aintal. He should be in there. He pointed to a door near the back of the table. Though I should warn you it will be hard to get in this guild. We only accept the best.

I understand what it takes, I said with a nod.

Then good luck, he nodded back.

When I got to the room I saw a man sitting behind a desk covered in books, his head behind one in his hand. So, you are here to join? He asked as he closed the book and set it down.

Yes I am, sir, I nodded.

Sir? No one has said that to me in a long time, he said.

    Sorry if it offended you.

Offended? Of course not. Just surprised, He said with a laugh. Now what makes you want to join the Aether's guard?

Hearing the name filled me with excitement. I grew up on stories of heroes of old and all the great things they did. Then one day I heard of the Aether's guard, the heroes of today. And the more I heard, the more I knew these people are heroes just like those of old. And as I grew, I told myself, 'One day I will be one too.'

A very nice story. Now tell me this, What makes you worthy to join the 'heroes of old'?

Very little. I am untrained in use of weapons and have no magic in me, but I can learn.

And if I turn you away?

I will leave. It is true I am not worthy of the heroes of old and may never be. But I will always try my best to help in any way I can, my heart grew heavy at the thought.

A grin grew on his face. I think you are more worthy than you think.

What do you mean? How could I be as good as you people?

There is strength, skill, knowledge, and heart. You lack the first three but have more of the last than many here. That is why I accept you. Come join the Aether's guard! He said, standing from his chair.

My heart lifted and with a nod I said, I will do my best to be worthy.

You already are. He put a hand on my shoulder and led me out the door and into the main room.

So we have a new member? The man near the door asked.

Yes we do, and I think he will be a good addition to our group. He turned to me, One last thing I haven't asked your name.

I am Nintal. I said with a nod.

Then Nintal, you are about to see something few people have seen before. Do you know why we call ourselves the Aether's guard?

The stories say it's because you came from a new world called the Aether. I continued following him.

That is not quite true. We didn't come from there, but we did find it, And now we must defend it from others who would seek to use it's magic for evil.

As we came to the long hall I saw a light at the end. What is that? I said trying to get a better  look.

    That is the Aether portal.

If you need to defend it why don't you just destroy the portal?

And let others build more and have no way to stop them?

I didn't think of that. As we got closer I could make out that it had a frame of a strange yellow stone that cast the yellow glow I saw when I came in, but the portal itself looked like water. When we got to the portal I could hear a sound almost like music. It was very calming and I thought, How could anyone use this for evil?

Aintal's voice brought me back to reality Are you ready?

I shook my head a bit, For what?

    To go in of course.

I get to see the Aether? This day just
