Follow the journey of a young girl, Sarah, as she endures trials that no youth should live through. From understanding what it is to have a father, to sexual and mental abuse, Sarah's early life is filled with turmoil from the darkest regions of ones mind.
"This giant monster is the first man to show me there is such a thing as evil. My first introduction to violence."
"The abuse, like poison, fed to us daily. Slowly killing us all."
" Feral and pretty, a rose covered in thorns and he can't find a spot to place his fingers to pick me."

Sarah is officially a licensed and retired commercial pilot. She graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Aviation Technology. She then went on as the chief pilot of an engineering firm in the Midwest for a couple years. Once she married a military man, she was whisked away from her land of corn and soybeans to start the next chapter in her life. Three moves into her marriage, she had to figure out a career that worked for a lady-on-the-run! Thank goodness for her geeky affection for algebra and geometry (and calculus.eep!) and a keen eye for design & color. Sarah's Gramma and mom taught her to enjoy crafts and handwork from a young age. She learned to crochet around age 4; played with beadwork and wire art from age 5 or 6; cross-stitch was second nature by the time she was in 2nd grade; and her school notebooks were always filled to brim with doodles. It was only a matter of time before she discovered the quilting world -- where art meets math and magic happens! By chance, she learned she had a knack for free motion quilting as well. Basing her style of FMQ on the doodles that filled her notebooks, she's classified her personal FMQ style as Sketchbook Quilting. She loves the opportunity to quilt for others She has been part of the Hoffman California Fabrics family, contributing as a surface pattern designer and releasing her premier fabric collection, Paradigm in June/July 2019. Her first and second collections for Moda are featured in this book.

    Chapter 1. Run, Run, Run!

I sit on the floor with Mommy beside me while we play Mario, Mommy’s favorite game. I glance up at her while I wait for the game to start. She is so pretty.  Long auburn hair, dark brown eyes and tan skin. Mostly, it is her smile that is the prettiest. Her smile makes the whole room fill with sunlight. Everyone tells me I look just like her. I love the idea of being pretty like my Mommy.

I look back at the television screen and huff. She stomped on my mushroom’s head again.  She giggles at me when I insist on being the mushrooms.

She had warned me, Sarah, I have to jump on the mushrooms. They will kill Mario if I don’t.

I am the mushrooms anyway. I just want to play with her, even if I can’t make my mushrooms move.

I jump, startled, as I hear The Monster’s deep and harsh voice yelling my Mommy’s name from the other room. The sudden boom of his rage scares me. Something is wrong. Mommy’s whole-body tenses and she’s not smiling anymore. The room is darker now as she leaves my side and walks into the kitchen. I crawl up on the chair to wait for her to come back. My feet stick straight out in front of me, not reaching the end of the cushion. I stare at my shoes, waiting for it to end, as he yells at her.

Why does he have to yell at her? It makes me so sad to see my Mommy in trouble. My feet look blurry as the tears well up in my eyes. I hear the first loud smack as his hand lands on her skin. I silently cry, tears spill over, and run down my cheeks. I want to stop him from hurting her. I am so small though. I can’t stop him. I sit there, torn. Do I try to save her? Or stay still so I don’t get hit too? My Mommy doesn’t cry like me though. She has told me before, she won’t give him the pleasure.

When someone tries to make you cry, you don’t give them what they want. Don’t you give them the pleasure Sarah!

She stares blankly ahead as he hits her over and over. When his hand finally tires, he drags her to the basement door, throws her down the stairs, and slams it shut. I hear him lock it tight before he walks away.

He walks past me. I keep staring at my shoes, afraid to look up. Afraid to even breath.

Stay the fuck away from that door, he says before going into his room.

I continue staring at my shoes. My Mommy isn’t bad. She didn’t do anything wrong. I hate him. I don’t understand why he is so mean. I want to go save my Mommy, but he will hit her again if I open the door. He will hit me if I move. I remain in the big chair for what seems like an eternity before he comes back and lets her out of the basement.

I have no memory of ever having a father. Michael, my brother who is four years older than me, doesn’t have one either. Michael and I look the same, like Mommy, except Michael has green eyes and blonde hair. We think Mommy made us all by herself.

Bobby, my baby brother, he has a father though. Something only little brothers must have. Michael and I are only Mommy’s, but the baby is Mommy’s and this man’s to share. Bobby’s father is a huge man with a ponytail and big thick arms. This giant monster is the first man to show me there is such a thing as evil. My first introduction to violence.

Mommy, Michael, Bobby, and I live with Bobby’s dad at his parents’ house in Delaware, Ohio. Bobby’s dad’s teenage brother Andrew and sister Amanda live there too.  They are very close and stay together in her room a lot. We rarely see Bobby’s grandparents. When we do, they act strange like the zombies on TV. None of them like us. We are not welcome at all and they let that be known very well, daily.

While Mommy goes to work and Michael goes to school, The Monster sleeps. I am made to watch Bobby. I’m told to keep him quiet so that his dad can sleep off his sickness. He is always sick in the mornings.

I sit with Bobby in the same big chair. Bobby is smaller than me. He has dark hair like me, but he has blue eyes instead of brown. We sit together watching T.V. until Bobby gets hungry. I go in the kitchen to get him some bologna from the fridge. I turn around and Bobby is on the table. He
