Introduction
Let me start by saying, I am not a doctor, nor do I work in a medical profession. Therefore, I am not qualified to give medical advice specific to your situation. I am simply a mother who tandem nursed and am sharing my journey and the information I have gathered in one place; making it easier for other mamas who may also be considering tandem nursing. Every woman’s experience is going to be unique, but we can always use support from one another.
This book covers the challenges that moms face when deciding to nurse their child through pregnancy, labor, nursing aversions, dysphoric milk ejection reflex (DMER), nursing after baby is born, how to gently wean and more. I hope my story empowers you to make the decision that is best for you, even if it means gently weaning. I have also gathered stories from other mamas who dealt with their own unique challenges with tandem nursing and gently weaning.
In addition, I cover how I chose to continue nursing my oldest through my pregnancy, a nursing aversion, labor and tandem nursing since the birth of my second daughter, until they both weaned completely. I have also included resources for support and motivation on your tandem nursing journey. The links to tandem nursing and aversion support were especially helpful to me.
Basically, this book is exactly what I wish had been available when I started my tandem nursing journey. I am sharing my story in the hope that I can help at least one mama out there with her decision to tandem feed, including the challenges she may face.
I am so happy you picked my story to read. I hope this book helps you on your breastfeeding journey.
Chapter One
What Is Tandem Nursing?
Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing, one of the most beautiful things that exist in nature. Think about how a woman can literally feed her baby with her body! In my eyes, this is a certain form of beauty, of divinity! To know that my body can not only form and bring another human being into the world, but that I can actually feed babies with my own milk from my own breasts- that puts me in a state of awe each time I think about it. It is an honour to be a woman.

Tandem nursing, or tandem breastfeeding, is when a mother breastfeeds more than one child at a time. Usually, people associate tandem nursing with a mother nursing twins. My tandem nursing journey started when my first daughter was about a year old. I knew she wasn’t ready to stop nursing, and I wanted to have a second child close to her in age. I did my research, and what I found only confirmed what I felt, in my heart, was right for us. Tandem nursing is one of the hardest and most rewarding choices you can make, not unlike motherhood.
Is tandem nursing normal? Absolutely! It is the way our bodies were designed to feed our young. As you know, everything a baby needs that first year is in breast milk, and the benefits don’t stop after they turn one. The release of beneficial hormones, like oxytocin, helps calm toddler tantrums, relaxes and grounds your
