    Before Beginning

He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

any people have heard of the idea of giving up something for Lent and they are intrigued. For others the fast of Lent, or foregoing some pleasure, is a regular part of Lent every year. It can feel good to have a concrete challenge, a sacrifice in order to reassure myself that I am really engaged–that I am really trying.

But it may not be so helpful to quickly dive in to that kind of a spiritual discipline. We all have unique personalities with our own individual challenges. Is it really best for everyone to simply think up something to give up for several weeks? Some people may need to add something to their daily routine rather than taking something away. For many different reasons, sacrifice is not always the best path

to spiritual growth. While sacrifice is sometimes effective as a way of cooperating with the Holy Spirit in your own growth, it can lead to pride, it sometimes fosters resentment towards God, and it may be a distraction from what God is intending to do with the next season of spiritual growth in your life.

Instead of thinking of Lent as a time of sacrifice, what if you imagine this as a season of setting aside lesser things in order to launch a renewed sense of the adventure of following the resurrected Christ?

The readings and reflection questions in this book are designed to help you take a lingering look at the things that can hold people back from launching into the adventure of following Jesus on a quest of life at its fullest.

To begin, read over some of the brief suggestions and ideas for adding a spiritual growth practice during Lent. These are not elaborate, difficult, or onerous. They are simple daily practices you may choose to do throughout Lent as a way of growing closer to God and more peaceful and effective in your daily living. Then each week you will read about a topic that will help support you in this journey.

This study does ask for a fairly high level of commitment. I hope you will find this to be a refreshing challenge. The stories, thoughts, questions, Bible references, and suggestions are all intended to help you see God’s work in your life and take steps to launch into new patterns of faithfulness. Many people will not have the time to read every part. Read only what will help you. Each segment is designed to support you as you make choices for how you are going to let this Easter launch you into following Jesus in new ways, or as a way of remembering some of the old ways and taking them up again. So take the parts that help you, and leave the rest behind.

    • Spend some time before Ash Wednesday in prayerful assessment of where you are in your spiritual journey.

    • Read the chapters, Lent Is For Launching, and Put It Into Practice, and consider what one thing God is asking you to work on during Lent this year.
