About this ebook

Have you ever come across something online that looks a little bit too good to be true? It might be a competition you've won that you didn't know you'd entered, or a new cryptocurrency with a low buy-in price and promised high returns. It's very possible that behind these tempting offers is a person who wants nothing more than to gather your information, take your money, or hack into your computer. Worse still, it can be hard to spot the differences between an imitation and a genuine request when online. Every day more victims of online scams are coming forward to share their stories. These victims have experienced losses of their money, jobs, and homes at the hands of scammers who have no regard for the turmoil they bring to others. These stories are documented in the hope that they may help others avoid the same fate.

Social Media Scams - Francis Zeppieri

Chapter 1: What is a Scam?

You may have heard the term scam being used recently, as it has come up quite frequently with the onset of modern technologies. In the era of the internet and it’s many privacy risks, the word has come to light more and more often. But what is a scam? We hear the term in so many different contexts, it can be difficult to discern it’s true meaning.

A scam can be seen as any type of fraudulent behavior. Typically this is linked to financial gain on the part of the scammer. This can be through anything from phishing emails, identity fraud, or credit card fraud. Where things get more difficult is knowing what is or is not a scam online. In day-to-day life, recognizing a fake driver’s license can be much easier than knowing if a profile online is valid or not.

So how can you tell if someone or something you’re encountering online, is in fact, fake or intending to scam you? The truth is, unless you’re familiar with online scams and some of the techniques employed in scamming someone, it can be very difficult for anyone to tell the difference between a fake account and a real one. With increases in cases of people scamming others online, many victims are learning to be vigilant the hard way and sharing their stories with others in order to help them. As these signs are being encountered, people who’ve experienced scams are sharing their stories to help others, and assist in what they need to look for. This could be anything from an edited photograph to an out-of-place email address or phone number. It can be troubling to think that in the information age, it can be so easy to deceive someone online. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Online dating, and more have all become hunting grounds between our hunter, the Scammer, and the hunted person being scammed.

Throughout this book we will be exploring these types of scams and the impacts they have on the lives of those involved. We will further be exploring the techniques used by the scammers in question, and sharing some of the things to be aware of when interacting with others online.

    Different Types of Scams

We are faced with several types of online scams when traversing this type of fraud. As mentioned above, the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more are all under fire for lax security and information sharing, with several large-scale hacking instances leaking users’ information over the years. These, however, are more well-known than some of the scams taking place today. Large-scale hacking is only one part of what occurs
