Cydelle's Ghost Hunt - Gwen Tolios
Chapter 1
CYDELLE BOOTH SAT CURLED up in a chair on the back porch. Before her, the land sloped down into a small meadow that made up a chunk of the backyard. She could barely make it out as the sunlight died. Easier to see were the ghosts of two horses grazing down there, their thick silver outlines filled with swirly silver smoke.
Meo~w.
She turned her head to see Ginger materialize on the far end of the porch, the ghost cat's soul filling her center as she walked. Cydelle had never known Ginger when she lived, but the barn cat as well as a few other animals frequently visited the farm.
As her mom had explained years ago, everything that lived had a soul. Souls were collections of memories, and the dead liked to visit the places they were happy in life. Eventually, the ghosts would fade away, they relived all the memories they wanted to and answered the call to Heaven.
The horses down in the meadow were the oldest ghosts who visited, their insides barely filled with the wisps of silver memory. Ginger in comparison looked almost solid, though silver instead of the tabby she had once been.
Meo~w,
the cat called again, still walking toward Cydelle. She was reliving one of her favorite memories.
Despite knowing what would happen, Cydelle reached out to pet the cat. As her hand moved toward Ginger's head, the ghost dissolved away. No two souls could exist in the same place, and as all of Cydelle's soul was there compared to just a part of Ginger's, the cat's ghost dispersed. Maybe she showed up in the dairy barn across the street. Or on the front porch. Or -
Mmmrrrm.
Ah. Inside the family room.
Cydelle wrapped her arms around her legs, hugging them tightly. The June evening was sunny and warm, not enough to turn on the air conditioner but enough for the windows to be wide open.
From the family room behind her came the sound of laughter and explosions. Rodger was having a sleepover with his friends. They'd been playing a racing game on the Xbox for an hour now, eating ice cream sundaes. Cydelle had gotten a sundae too, but she'd only eaten half of it. The rest sat melted and sticky in the bowl on the table next to her chair, the colored sprinkles dyeing the vanilla ice cream.
Cydelle sighed, not eavesdropping on her brother, but listening all the same. It wasn't fair. Cydelle's eleventh birthday was in four days. She should be having friends over on a Saturday night. She should be having a good time, sharing jokes and eating
