A Set of Bad Kitties - Cathy Smith

    A Kittybot

THERE WAS A TENTATIVE knock on Anita’s bedroom door.Mom? Sandy said.

Anita felt dread in her stomach when her daughter held her smartphone in her hand. Was Sandy about to tell her she was being cyberbullied or stalked? What is it?

Can we adopt a kitty? All my friends are doing it. She showed all the Instagram posts of her friends holding kittens. Some of them were animated and mewing kittens.

Anita shook her head. I hope they still want their kitties when the lockdown is over.

Sandy frowned. I’ve always liked kitties. She held up her smartphone to show her Hello Kitty skin.

We can’t get a cat. I’m allergic to them, Anita said.

    Allergic?

I asked for a kitten when I was seven and had a nasty allergy attack when it came into the house. We had to take it back to the animal shelter. Anita pointed at her puffer for emphasis.

    Oh, Sally said.

SANDY TOOK TO WATCHING the videos the animal shelter posted for new kitties. The algorithms supplied them with an alternative to a living kitty. A VR kitty bounced onto the screen in an ad. Sally didn’t even bother skipping the ad and watched it in amazement.

Anita rolled her eyes at this. Thank God, the parental controls meant Sandy couldn’t make in-app purchases.

Sandy held up her smartphone to show a kitty avatar on her smartphone. The kitty rolled around and showed his belly on screen when Anita frowned at him. Anita knew it was nothing but a crass manipulation but felt herself soften. It’s cute, but I prefer to look at videos of actual cats.

The cat videos were the closest she could come to owning a cat, even though she loved the whole idea of them. The product page claimed the VR kitties were based on the mind map of a cat and had feline minds and instincts.

The in-app purchase was modest, so she sighed and clicked the button.

Here’s your kitty. At least no living cat would suffer neglect when the quarantine was over. She hated to think of what would happen to the adopted cats when people got back to their regular lives.

RITA HAD THOUGHT MAO was a harmless substitute for a cat. She didn’t count on the stream of targeted ads sent by the vendor. Sandy showed her a video of a yellow cat chasing a laser pointer. Its movements had a certain stiffness that made Rita think the cat had an injury. Did the cat’s owner set up a GoFundMe page for its vet bill?

"No, this is an android body for Mao. I can download him into a body, and I’ve been feeding his algorithm by viewing
