    About the Author

JESUS PRESENTED TO THEM ANOTHER PARABLE, SAYING,

"THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE A MUSTARD SEED,

WHICH A MAN TOOK AND PLANTED IN HIS FIELD.

    IT’S THE SMALLEST OF SEEDS;

    YET WHEN IT’S FULL GROWN,

IT’S GREATER THAN THE OTHER HERBS.

    IT BECOMES LIKE A TREE,

SO THAT THE BIRDS OF THE AIR COME

    AND NEST IN ITS BRANCHES."

    TREE OF LIFE VERSION

    God ’s Dream

Who knows how long I had been lying there. I had lost track of time. Yet I wasn’t bothered by it.

Instead, I wanted to bottle the moment and preserve it forever. There was no place I would rather be. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining bright, playfully peeking its face out from behind the billows of white clouds.

I lazily rested on my soft blanket within the shade of a gorgeous oak tree. My long, curly brown hair was pulled from behind my neck, wildly fanned out above my head. Occasionally, the light gentle breeze would catch my hair and softly caress my cheek. I liked when this happened. There was a faint scent of blooming flowers floating through the air. I could hear the singsong conversation between two birds, somewhere in the top of the tree. It seemed like time was standing still.

I had recently given my heart to Jesus and was beginning to read the Bible on a regular basis. As I was daydreaming, I found myself being drawn back to a verse that had snagged my heart a few weeks earlier when I was curled up on my bed in my college dorm room. I was casually reading, when suddenly, it popped off the page. It was John 10:10 where Jesus says: I have come that they may have life and have it to the full!

This revelation made my heart come alive! It gave me hope! Almost immediately, I began researching what Jesus meant by, have life to the full. I quickly learned Greek was the original language in which this passage was written. And the Greek word for life is "zoë, translated God’s quality of life or life in its fullest sense"!

Jesus came to bring abundant life?!

My life was busy, but I wouldn’t call it abundant.

I suddenly felt permission to dream about Jesus’ plan for my future. What does God mean by the abundant life? Do Christian millionaires encounter it? Did Mother Teresa experience the abundant life? Did she connect with what Jesus came to bring?

From my perspective, many Christians I knew wouldn’t say they were living the zoë, abundant life. And this disconnect bothered me. So I pondered these things, and decided I would do further research to discover what was missing. I found there is so much more to Christian living than I had imagined. It’s what happens below the surface that makes our lives healthy or sickly. It’s what goes on behind closed doors and in the crevices of our minds that determine our positive outcomes. I learned God’s preset patterns would bring us great joy and abundance, if only we will follow them.

Throughout these pages, I will use an oak tree as a metaphor to share my story of connecting to John 10:10. My desire is to help you shave off decades of needless struggle in your own journey and reveal how to connect with the zoë, abundant life.

    The Abundant Zoë Full Life

I wasn’t sure what the abundant life looked like. So I asked God, "Would You show me what it means to experience Your kind of life in the fullest sense? Would You help me to understand what abundance is to You?"

Instantly, He brought to mind the moment when I was lying on the ground beneath the oak tree. I remembered it well: As I was enjoying the peaceful breeze, I had been thinking about my current navigation through life, which was the use of a management tool that I had been introduced to eighteen months prior. It is called the Wheel of Life. It was designed to help people visually examine their life, assess where they are currently, and identify what changes they need to make in order to function more effectively. As I was pondering this, I realized it had been an incredibly helpful tool, but I realized God was about to show me a new way to bring order and peace to my life. But first, let’s look at the wheel:

    [Figure A—The Wheel of Life]

It is termed the Wheel of Life because it looks like a wheel. Each spoke represents a different aspect of life: spiritual, physical, professional, relational, and financial. (Some Wheels are more detailed than others.) The goal is to evaluate the spokes periodically to keep your life fully balanced, so that the wheel will roll smoothly. For some, the objective is for every spoke to maintain a ten out of ten in every category of one’s life.

But according to this diagram, it seemed my life wasn’t rolling well. My spokes were out of balance, as they were at different levels of success. And the reason: God was becoming increasingly larger in my heart, mind, and emotions. Clearly, He had greater significance and value than the other parts. According to this model, my wheel would always be out of balance; due to the amount of time I spent seeking God. I believe my relationship with Him should ever-outweigh the
