Love - Dan Mez
Introduction
Forgiving myself for leaving her took years. The guilty feeling of letting her down didn’t want to let go.
I put myself in such a bad position on the chessboard, in a game between my heart and my ego. My heart’s king piece had no other choice but to surrender to ego and start a whole new game. The move crushed us both. I was so confused at how this decision could be the right one for me to find freedom, but seemingly forced me to give up on love at the same time.
My whole life has been a search for freedom. I tried to untangle myself from the seduction of being free, but most of my actions only tied more knots. At thirty-one years of age, it was time to dive into whatever it took to free myself before the cords strangled me.
Growing up as an athlete, I was taught to measure everything. How far I threw the discus, how high I jumped, how fast I ran. Tracking every element: my workouts, times, records, and goals. The driving force was to improve on those measurements, always. As I transitioned from being an athlete to an entrepreneur, nothing changed. I had to reach a certain amount of new customers each week. A certain amount in sales each month. A certain amount of profit each year.
But once I attained these measurable goals, the positive feelings were temporary. Soon after, I felt empty and couldn’t understand why. I wasn’t free. Instead I was still bound to a way of thinking from which I didn’t know how to escape.
And so the freedom I was so desperately searching for became a new measure—a new goal. I sold my business, left my loving relationship, and packed my bags for an adventure. I didn’t know at the time that it would last for three and a half years.
Well, I knew the message all along. We all do. The gateway to freedom is love. Unfortunately, growing up and becoming a man
in the eyes of society, my family, and myself, distorted this once-clear message for me. Why did I have this need to feel so significant? Why was it necessary for me to prove my worth and measure my impact before I could feel true freedom?
Following my passion for cooking and food was the start of my journey. I worked in a restaurant in Tokyo, travelled India with one of its top chefs, and enrolled in a cooking school in Paris for a summer. I didn’t have this vision when I let go of everything; in fact, I had no clue what would fill each day. I was fortunate to be able to hear my heart and lead my life with the passion I was craving to explore.
Over the past three and a half years of travel, I’ve had many meaningful experiences. Surprisingly, the ones that taught me the most valuable lessons came from strangers. It finally clicked when I understood their significance to me and the lack of validation I gave them. Most often the lesson only sank in upon further reflection, so I never had the chance to acknowledge them. Does this take away their significance? Clearly not.
This collection of short reflections is a reminder that we don’t need to wait for any acknowledgement to feel significant or to feel love. We don’t need to seek approval to feel that we are impacting the world in an important way. It’s a reminder that our existence is enough, and that we are always loved. More importantly, these stories remind me that we are always that stranger.
When we come from a place of love, we are continuously impacting the world in a way that we can never measure, and don’t need to comprehend—we are the infinite energy of love. These strangers did not try to impact me—they did not even know that I needed their help. When our intention is purely, love we are our most powerful selves.
A young boy embraced his mother in the slums of Mumbai. His innocent smile taught me where true happiness resides. A dance with a stranger in Berlin helped free my mind from the guilt of enjoying a moment. A twist of an ankle and my instinct to help taught me purpose.
These beautiful lessons from strangers changed my life. They made me realize that we will never know how many people we have an impact on, but we do know how—through love. If we come from a place of love, we are constantly in an avalanche of love. In an avalanche, whether on land, in snow or sand, you can’t tell which catalyst has created the momentum. One element sets it off, and the flow keeps growing as it gathers more energy through each independent rock or grain of sand. The boundary between the parts is barely seen, and yet the energy that connects them is clear. There is no difference between a moving rock and one that is still; the potential energy is in both of them, and the only difference is that one has been wedged into the mountain or land, while the other is free. Once a rock starts moving, it becomes part of the flow, part of something bigger.
The energy of love is no different than this type
