      CHAPTER 1

      Ayrwynn! What are you doing??? You’ve polished that bookcase three times already. The books will slide right out of the case if you polish it anymore. said Ayrwynn’s exasperated father.

      This wasn’t the first time Woodworker Aelfred had to talk to her. Ever since she saw a library during a bookcase installation, that’s all she could think about.

      That girl loves books...quite possibly too much he thought to himself. It irritated him that he was starting to get a reputation for the shiniest bookcases in the whole kingdom instead of the strongest.

      I’m sorry Father. It’s just such a nice bookcase that I wanted it to look perfect. I can just imagine the books that will go on these shelves. The colour and smell of the leather bindings. Small books, big giant books. Books about faraway lands, plants and trees, animals, knights, books for learning and books filled with wonderful stories... they make books about everything! Then there are beautiful illuminated manuscripts filled with calligraphy and amazing pictures! Wouldn’t it be delightful to be able to read and write books?! It would be incredible to—

      Ayrwynn!! Silence my child! Aelfred cried. I have something of great importance to discuss with you but you must stop talking!

      I’m sorry Father. I do talk too much sometimes. Ayrwynn replied, feeling a little sheepish.

      Yes, Ayrwynn, you do. That is something you will have to learn to control. You are twelve now and it is time for you to begin an apprenticeship and I have decided that the best place for you will not be in our woodworking shop.

      But Father! I love it here! I don’t want to leave!

      Ayrwynn! Will you stop and let me finish?

      Yes, Father.

      I spoke to Master Scribe Nicholas. After a long discussion where I had to promise him two new work tables with matching bookcases and another section of bookcase for the library, he agreed to take you as an apprentice. You will be taught reading and writing and dictation, among other things, in preparation for a job as a scribe. Now, what do you think about that?

      Father!!! Thank you!!! Ayrwynn dropped her tools, ran to her father and gave him the biggest hug she’d ever given him in her whole life.

      CHAPTER 2

      It felt like the longest and shortest walk Ayrwynn had ever taken. She was sad to say goodbye to her father but at the same time so excited
