It was a cold wet night when Lt. Colby got the call! The frantic caller on the other end was stammering! Hurry, Hurry! Get down here; I think I know this guy! I think I seen him on T.V., or maybe in the newspapers!
Slow down!
Colby responded. Is this guy bothering you, or what?
No!
he shouted, He’s dead!
The caller identified himself as the night watchman at pier 3 down on the docks!
There was a continuous light rain when Colby and Sgt. Rolls got to the scene! The coroner was already there! Ralph Young, a long haired hippy looking reporter, was also on the scene snapping pictures! Young was well known in Washington, and worked for the Washington Free Press. The Press was the forerunner dedicated to publishing all the smut they could find out about all politicians! Colby didn’t like Young at all, and shouted, Get Young out of here now!
After looking at the body, Colby stammered, Holy Shit! No wonder the watchman though he knew this guy! It’s Senator Rolls! He’s been all over the news the past several months for supposedly taking bribes from foreign oil interest!
The Senator was lying on his back in a metal rectangular container completely submerged in a light oil! The Lieutenant immediately called for backup, and the Coroners office! The Coroner arrived about a half hour later, looked at the Senator’s body and exclaimed, I’ve seen thousands of bodies over the years, but this is the first one submerged in oil!
The Senator’s body was removed from the metal container, and other than being covered with the light oil, he was dressed immaculately! Expensive suit, shirt, silk tie and patent leather shoes! There didn’t seem to be a struggle of any kind! He still had on a large diamond ring and still wearing a Rolex wrist watch! His wallet was removed from his inside coat pocket, and contained all his identification, considerable cash, and credit cards! Nothing seemed to be missing, so it certainly ruled out robbery! As Colby searched the other inside coat pocket, he pulled out a sealed plastic bag! There appeared to be a note inside! He opened the bag, and withdrew the note! It was crudely printed, and read, The Senator was a thief! He lived high on illegal oil payoffs! I condemned him to die with the oil he lived on! The others will get their just dues also!
It was signed, The Concerned Citizen!
Every possible government agency was on the pier the next morning! Washington was in a frenzy as the Washington Free Press showed the Senators grizzly pictures that Young had taken! After the smoke cleared, and the bickering stopped as to who was to be in charge of the investigation, it was decided the F.B.I. would take the lead in handling it! The complete dock was gone over with a fine tooth comb! Not a single clue was found! They would have to start from scratch!
Special Agent Tom Magee and his staff were assigned to head up the investigation. Magee was a mild mannered man in his early sixties, was in excellent shape and looked to be in his forties! He stood slightly over six foot tall, and his hair was graying a little on the sides! He had a crew cut type haircut, which he donned since joining the F.B.I. right out of college! He didn’t put up with any nonsense from his staff and was quick to critise on even the smallest of mistakes!
Agent Magee immediately had his staff look into all the different organizations that were holding rallies in Washington against any politician or political party! He also had them check on any and all persons that may have been arrested during any demonstrations! Magee’s right hand man was Agent Fred Wyatt. Wyatt was in his late fifties, was slightly taller than Magee, and was also in excellent shape! Wyatt was a Captain with Special Forces! He served ten years in the Army, but decided to apply for a position with the F.B.I.! He scored one of the highest scores ever in the written exams, and was selected by Magee to work in his department! After several years working in the field, Magee promoted Wyatt, and brought him into headquarters as his right hand man! Magee had complete confidence in Wyatt! He and Magee worked out every morning at the headquarters gym! Magee was a stickler for morning workouts by his entire staff, including the female secretaries! Magee told Wyatt to handle the investigation, and don’t miss anything! After all, this was a United states Senator, and a lot of shit was going to hit the fan over it!
Wyatt sent out Agent Snyder and Agent Kent to talk with the late Senators wife! After arriving at the Senators home, they were invited to wait in the office while Mrs. Rolls was brought down. When Mrs. Rolls arrived accompanied by the family physician, Agent Snyder said, I apologize for asking questions at this time Mrs. Rolls, but their may be something you can tell us that may be helpful. Do you mind answering some questions now?
They could see she was still in somewhat of a shock, but nodded her head yes. Agent Snyder continued, Do you know of anyone who would want to harm your husband?
he asked. She shook her head no, and then replied. He was an easy going man, and had a lot of friends around the world!
Snyder continued, Did he get any threats lately?
While sobbing, she shook her head no. Any threatening letters or phone calls?
he asked! She started to shake her head no, and then hesitated! He did get several phone calls late at night while we were in bed, and once while we were asleep that seemed to upset him! I asked who it was that called, and he just replied,
Nothing
