    10 One Year Later

I dedicate this book to every child I have ever taught, both in church and in the Marshall County, Tennessee School system. Through you, I was challenged, inspired, blessed, and loved.

    1 Thursday Night

Lacy’s dark brown eyes stared at the cardboard box in Trish’s hands.

Come on in, Lacy said to her neighbor. Mom, Trish is here! she called out to the kitchen.

Wiping her hands with a dish towel, Carol Evans entered the living room to greet the tall, young woman. With the normal curiosity of any ten -year-old, Lacy thought she would come unglued before the proper, social chatter ended. How long was she going to have to wait before she could ask what was in that box?

Finally, in her British accent, Trish said, It’s too bad my job keeps me away so much that we hardly know each other. I’m so sorry I didn’t hear about Mr. Evans’ tragic accident until today. Trish opened the flaps of the box. Like a puppet clown popping out of a child’s jack-in-the-box, a copper colored rabbit bounded out of the cardboard box and onto the floor! Grabbing the rabbit and scooping him into her arms, Trish extended one of the rabbit’s front paws toward Lacy for a handshake.

Then Trish said, Lacy, meet Jack. He is a Holland Lop. Jack, meet Lacy. She may be your new owner.

Not knowing what to say, Lacy said nothing. She wasn’t interested in much of anything these days.

Breaking the uncomfortable silence of the room, Mrs. Evans asked, Lacy, honey, are you okay?

    Lacy only nodded.

Jack needs someone who can give him more time and attention than I can, Trish explained. My job is changing. I’ll be traveling more than ever now. I certainly don’t want to push him off on you, Lacy, if you don’t really want him. The last thing Jack needs is another home where he gets no attention.

After another long stretch of silence, Lacy said, I just don’t know how to feel right now.

I understand that, said Trish. "What if we do this? I’m leaving tomorrow for a week-long conference in New York. You could take Jack on a trial basis. By the end of the week you should know whether or not you want
