    Introduction

    It can begin like a campfire, comforting and fun. But then, as time goes by, something happens. The relationship loses its spark. Or the spark causes a horrible explosion and you are left surrounded by ash – has it burnt out?

    There are other relationships that never get off the ground at all. By ‘relationships’, I am not just referring to the romantic variety. I am talking about your children, your parents, friends, work colleagues - anyone that you may come into contact with.

    Sometimes our relationships can be difficult, so bad in fact that you could relate to Jean-Paul Sartre’s quote: Hell is other people. They challenge us, scare us and revitalize us all at the same time. It is a constant pushing and pulling of emotions. When a relationship is not going well we may feel frustration, resentment, anger, shame and guilt. The feelings are endless.

    So what does it take to turn that relationship around?

    It is easy to list all the things you think the other person is doing wrong but as they say, it takes two to tango. Love or hate them, other people are an intrinsic part of what it means to be human. Deep down, we all need a sense of belonging, a connection to others.

    No one’s perfect.

    Not you. Not me. Not them. We all need other people - including their imperfections - not just to survive but also to learn about things and enjoy life. In addition, we innately need to feel we ‘belong’. Either you can continue to push people away, or you can invite
