    Chapter 1

Tommy tumbled wearily into bed. He hadn’t even brushed his teeth. Just too tired. The nights spent stacking shelves at the supermarket after finishing his regular job was just about killing him. But it would not need to be for much longer. He had almost enough to pay off the gambling debt his late mother had incurred over the years. Debt he didn’t know she had until the debt collector came calling, a few months after she passed away.

She had borrowed money from a loan company, who had passed it on to the debt collection agency after not receiving any payments for a month.

He only knew it was gambling debts because his aunt had told him.

He was about to drop off when his phone rang. Who on earth would be ringing at one in the morning? He didn’t recognise the number and was tempted to ignore it. But then, it might be important. He held it to his ear, and said tiredly, Hello.

    Tommy?

It was a female voice, high pitched and anxious. He didn’t recognise it.

    Who is it?

Tommy, it’s Alison. Alison Grey, Harry’s friend. I think I’ve killed him! What?

He sat bolt upright, his tiredness gone.

    You’ve what? he repeated.

Harry was one of his mates, and he seemed to have an endless stream of women. He vaguely remembered meeting an Alison once, if it was the same girl.

I’ve killed him! she said again, almost hysterically.

He took a breath to gather his befuddled thoughts.

    Did you ring the police?

    He told me not to.

    Who told you not to?

    Harry!

    Tommy was confused.

I thought you said Harry was dead!

    He is!

He took another breath, then said quietly, Alison, you’re not making sense.

She sobbed, He said if anything ever happened to him, to call you first. Tommy’s sense of confusion increased.

    For God’s sake, why?

He said he had stuff in the house he didn’t want anyone to find.

Harry was a part-time drug dealer. He sold what he called medicinal cannabis to anyone who wanted it.

I don’t think it matters much if he’s dead. What happened? Why do you say you killed him?

He came home a short while ago. He got me out of bed and demanded I get him some dinner. I was angry. I heated some lasagna that had been in the fridge for a week, gave it to him, he ate it, went to sit in the lounge and now he’s dead! she said almost in one breath.

Tommy shook his head in disbelief. Where did he find these women? ‘Serve him right if he really was dead,’ he thought unreasonably, but he was tired.

He said firmly, Alison, ring 000 right now. Tell them what happened.

    But, she started to say.

    Right now! he interrupted.

    I’m coming over.

He terminated the call and wearily got
