About this ebook

Welcome to the gates of hell. Just kidding. Welcome to the 100-page empire that stands before you. My name is Robert Sales. While I do not work in any type of sales department, I do think the connotation of my last name may have led me into the world of business and entrepreneurship. Now that we got that out

    Getting Started

What do you need to understand about yourself and the business before you start? What are the first steps to make when starting a mobile unit?

    Importance of Passion

No one will do it for you. No one really wants to help you. Very few will inspire you. And even fewer will care about you. People care about themselves. Just like you care about yourself.

But let me give you a big clue to success. The only way to actualize your goals and ambitions is through self - inspiration, determination, and hard work that starts before everyone else gets up and after everyone else has gone to sleep.

When people say, I'm having a bad day. What they mean is, I've let other people and my circumstances dictate my attitude. Not only is that unjustifiable, but it is also a sign of mental weakness. If you tell yourself you're going to have a bad day, you will have a bad one. Likewise, if you tell yourself you're going to have a good day, chances are you will have a good one. The day is not bad until you name it so.

    Philosophy drives our attitudes.

Attitude drives actions. Actions drive results. Results drive lifestyles.

    Personal Branding 101

Establish yourself as an expert. Why just be in the field, when you can be perceived on top of it? You own 100% of your business, right? You are an expert on your business. Be seen and known as a leader - stand in front of the group, get your group involved, and then lead them. Your group can be your customers. Find them. Then lead them everywhere you go.

    - Create demand for your product or service - through means other than direct advertising.

    - Get your business community to have confidence in you as a respected, high - caliber individual.

    - Get the business community to have confidence in your business - earn a reputation for quality performance so well, people can't stop talking about it.

    - Separate yourself from the competition - get in front of the pack and set a standard.

    - Gain professional stature - your image is determined by others, and your outreach determines your image.

I want to take some time to reflect on how my business came into the market. In Cedar Falls, Iowa there is a healthy population of 41,000 and the surrounding population within a 25 - mile radius is 106,000 - a large town for Iowa. Previous mini donut vendors were established before me, along with eight chains of bakery retailers.

Before I was on the scene, people were getting donuts from someone else. Granted, it wasn't always in the most convenient way at athletics events, but regardless, they were still getting them. Eating donuts from other vendors at big festival events, country fairs, or the local Dunkin Donuts. While I could’ve seen it as a disadvantage, I choose not to. I was simply replacing another vendor - maintaining equilibrium. The growth I've been able to see through my own venture has been through connecting a product to a person - something my competition didn’t implement. By becoming the face of the brand I connected with my customers on a deeper level. This allowed me to sell an experience and a product.

I could have named Rob’s Mini Donuts something else, in reality, it was very close to being named Rob & Berts Mini Donuts. However, I could have done something completely different. I could have called it the Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts of the world, or something completely detached from my vision and passion. While Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts have a story of how they gained their name, they were not directly connected to an active person in the business - the names don’t echo the story of the hands that crafted the enterprise.

When you go to have donuts at Rob’s Mini Donuts and you are served by Rob, the experience strengthens the brand. No longer are customers buying donuts, they are buying an experience. It's intoxicating, in a good way. It becomes the why behind the business.

    Expanding the Personal Brand

My personal brand accelerated the growth of my business fast. At a pace faster than a single product could have. That's what's been able to grow or add to the richness of my growth, that it's not the product because the product would have been there.

Early on I have posed the question,

    "How do I duplicate Rob?

That question was one that I never had thought of, it was a question posed to me to start thinking about my franchising capabilities. Franchises have systems in place to create a repeatable experience. For example, at Chick - fil - A, my pleasure is said at every store. What systems do I need to put in place before you start up the business to ensure easy expansion in the future? Are things written out, plans in place, has the exit plan been made before starting?

    Day to Day Building

While social media is important, the core of the food truck experience happens on the street - Twitter and Facebook alone don't build a business. Although having fun and accessible brand is a solid foundation. Your brand is going to be built on the service your guests experience at the truck. It is essential to embrace the chaos and openness of the street. Make the most of it when interacting with guests.

Smiling - is the most important thing you can do to improve sales, due to mirror neurons in the brain. So if you’re smiling, they will smile right back. And who isn’t
