Hebrew Decoded! Vol I - Moti Kanyavsky (Kanyevski)
Introduction
T
he meaning Alif-Beit is the strong House
, House of the Bull
or the House with solid foundations
.
A clarification first. All which is addressed to the male gender is valid to the female gender as well.
Once you got through the book, you will be able to view the Hebrew language as well as other languages in a different form, new and revolutionary. Simultaneously, as old as mankind. A way long forgotten.
Why is it so important to study the origins and the meaning of the Hebrew language?
There are many theories about the origins of language, the origins of script and in general and of the Hebrew script specifically. Some of the theories are contradictory. Is it possible at all to reach the truth? Is there a time machine that can confirm the existing theories?
If you are a Hebrew speaker, English, German, or one of the Indo-European, Semitic, Afro-Asiatic languages, or any other related language, this book is meant for you. The Hebrew language prevails in the Old Testament and is the root on which it sits. If you are interested in the ancient Hebrew legends, old mythologies, Ugarian poetry, stories about God and about various other gods
, North German Scandinavian mythologies, ancient Indian methodology, and beliefs of the ancient World, then this
book is for you. Hebrew stories and their impact were absorbed into today's main languages and religions. With the means of this book, it would be possible to learn some important aspects about language. For example, it would be easier to understand the names of mythological gods, what is attributed to them and what it reflects upon us as mankind. Up till now, I have not been able to locate any comprehensive book about the subject and which could explain the original meaning of the Hebrew letters and language and the ancient roots and linkage of the Hebrew word roots and the German and English languages.
I studied almost all available books and articles which I was able to locate on the subject, I checked out various theories of language evolution, language family classification into different groups, as well as other different and strange theories. Thus, after a study of several years, I am now putting my conclusion into writing. I do hope you, the reader will find my book informative and interesting.
As for the various controversies found in language studies, it should be noted that every such language study or the study of prehistoric civilizations is almost completely speculative and is based on lack of evidence and circumstances only. In most instances, it is possible to interpret findings in various ways. There is no real preference to one or other way, except the use of common sense.
CLARIFICATION
A distinction should be made between recorded scientific data
which is on one hand presumably circumstantial evidence and hypothesis on the other hand. Imagine an epoch of about 10,000 years ago, when very few people lived worldwide. Amongst them, only a further smaller group of isolated individuals could transfer information in a symbolic and pictographic manner. A further isolated and fewer individuals could interpret correctly the same information. Consequently, findings on the subject are indeed scarce. In the absence of a time machine, ancient language study is not the same as an established mathematical science, far from it. As a matter of fact, language study is mainly based on hypotheses and specific observations. Especially so, when it comes to prehistoric periods and lack of findings in this field. The book is based on my observations and my interpretation of the findings. It is written as an educational book for education on Language and the meaning of the Hebrew Language, in the first place to Hebrew speakers, and all related languages, and not as an academic book. The book consists of a short overview of the evolution of Hebrew and other signs and symbols which evolved from it. Short as the overview might be, it opens (or widens) a window to the understanding of the Hebrew tongue and language as well as to other related languages in the world.
THE COVERAGE EXTENT OF THE OVERVIEW
For the purpose of writing and editing the book, I investigated numerous issues including geological studies, studies of mankind evolution, climate changes and their influence on the evolution of different species, communication among apes, communication among humans, the history of worldwide arts, migration of peoples, the evolution of various languages, numerous history books, and linguistic studies. Most of the issues investigated are not mentioned in the book and others are still to be investigated thoroughly. Herein forward are several main key points of language evolution which were considered while writing this book, part of which are still to be explored.
Reasons as to the formation of speech as a method of communication.
There are nowadays studies on the development of the ability to communicate and how it is a key for the survival of modern mankind after the cataclysmic events which destroyed most of life on earth about 80,000 years ago. An event or a series of events known as the term Bottleneck
in D.N.A. research performed on humans and apes while in the same time it is known that a large variety of humans, apes, and other animal species existed earlier but which simply disappeared. The connection between these events and the development of language is still to be investigated.
Another study subject was performed on the of the development of humans as an Amphibious
creature and about the connection between water flooding, as a result of violent climatic changes and the pressure of necessity to wander or travel on, or partly in water and the impact it had on the development of throat bone structure enabling speech. In this study, for example, it was discovered that the fat we have underneath our skin is characteristic of amphibious animals and does not normally occur in other dry land animals.
This can explain the lack of body hair, the location of the skull and the trachea (windpipe), the change in the location of the vocal cords which added to the ability of man to communicate with a larger variety of sounds than that of other apes and primitive Homo
, Human-like creatures. Perhaps because of a decrease in the ability to communicate by means of body gestures whilst swimming.
Some of the most meaningful changes which contributed to the spread of the speech and symbols communication ability were a consequence of cataclysmic events. According to genetic examinations performed on humans and animals, scientists believe that the eruption of Mount Toba in Sumatra provoked the Ice Age, extreme climatic changes, and vast destruction of assorted animal species and humans, about 75,000 to 80,000 years ago. The vast destruction in one corner of the earth was accompanied most probably by a meteor collision with earth, on the other side of the planet. As mentioned, these events and other related events caused the vast destruction of animals, apes, and Hominidae (hominids). Whereas today's most existing species dispersion is a result of the last eighty thousand years alone.
Due to the scarcity of findings, updated discoveries should be investigated, discoveries related to migration waves during the prehistoric period, the dispersion of the Neanderthal man, the Denisovans, the vast extinction, and the beginning of Homo sapiens distribution.
According to an updated D.N.A. research, almost all humans originated from about 15 thousand individuals. Few of them came out of Africa (about 6000 individuals in various migration waves and different periods) about 70,000 years ago. Genetic research proved that what helped to the survival of these groups and the extinction of other groups of people is the change in the levels of the testosterone hormone and the levels of communication amongst the individuals in the groups. This hormone has to do with violent behavior, lack of cooperation, and low communication level. The hormone is essential especially for males, for reproduction and survival. An excess of this hormone causes behavior that could be defined as asocial behavior
, competitive and violent.
Several studies indicate that groups that were annihilated, such as the Neanderthal man males, had high levels of Testosterone which might have caused living in small groups with low communication levels. Such a low level of communication did not allow the revolutions that advanced mankind to the levels of technological development and dispersion which is noted nowadays. Further studies are required to examine the projection it had on the development of language and communication.
The major developmental origin of language and human culture development are a result of the events of the last 70,000 years. These events were probably caused, by means of mutation, via the decrease in the levels of Testosterone hormone in a specific group of people. This effect caused some groups of people to succeed in the development of better communications and its distribution. This development allowed, during several eras, the cooperation of larger groups, which kept growing larger. This assisted in their survival.
Part of the changes that occurred, made an impact on the communication between groups of people, also allowed the construction of larger water vessels, and thus allowed water migration, sailing further than before, and for long periods. Consequently, settlements in far-away islands became possible, intentionally or unintentionally, for example, because of vessel drifting due to storms.
One of the first migration waves was that of a group of migrants who arrived, probably via dry, or almost dry land, from Asia to Australia about 70000 years ago. At that time, the sea level was much lower than today, and the passage between Asia, the Indonesian Islands, Australia, and Papua New Guinea was most probably, entirely or almost entirely, via dry land, or short sailing only.
The later climatic changes caused the icebergs to melt and as a result a change in the sea level. Has caused in turn the continental disconnection, and played a major contributory role in the development of language. The ancient Australian languages should still be investigated. Most of these languages went through a change about 5000 years ago due to interaction with migrant groups probably arriving from the area of India. Several groups of individuals in south Australia still use language which tends to be more ancient language families. Unfortunately, most of the Australian languages were annihilated during the last one hundred years. Only a handful of old individuals can still use these old languages, a number which decreases by the day.
Another development that led to the spread of man and language, was the invention of the bow and arrow; This invention, according to findings, happened probably less than 70,000 years ago. The Australian aborigines got separated from the mainland around 70,000 ago, and the bow and arrow did not arrive there. later waves of migration to Australia, probably from India, and language change in northern Australia about 5000 years ago, remained almost without a genetic imprint. This contact with India, (around 5000 years ago), caused a language change, but surprisingly did not lead to inventions like archery in Australia.
Ancient people groups in Asia have migrated to the Americas in waves of migration about 11,000 years ago. The way of life and languages in which some of these immigrants spoke link those groups to the Central European Finnish people (this was further demonstrated and proved according to DNA research). The influence of the ancient European languages (which are not yet known) on Native American languages has yet to be studied.
More in-depth research is still needed also on the first waves of migration of Indo-European groups to Japan, more DNA research is needed, and studies on the later waves of migration of groups of Chinese and Asian descent and the effects of these, earlier and later waves on development of the Japanese language.
The development of shipping in prehistoric times and the ancient world had a Significant impact and influence on the language and distribution of peoples. According to some DNA studies on the links between Asian-African languages and genetic links between Africa and Asia, genetic links were found between groups of hunter-gatherers
from South Africa and regions in Ethiopia, and between groups in South Asia. As well as, ties to groups that are on different islands along the way. This indicates the long-distance sea voyages and development of the language in ancient times.
The drastic changes in human culture because of the melting of glaciers have affected large population centers, lifestyles, and languages. The great mammals, which survived the ancient cataclysmic events, became extinct between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago, probably as a result of archery, innovative hunting technology by inventing traps and fences. Moreover, it is possible that climate change, and a new ice age, resulted in growing groups of hunters cooperating with each other, and hence language and communication changed and improved. These improvements probably assisted the hunters, starting from the planning stage, and ending with the distribution of the loot. These changes in culture inevitably led to the development of the first laws
between different groups of hunters and nomads.
Other developments that influenced the development of language are, for example, the recent development of new philosophy
and understanding, which brought man to the rank of ruler of nature
. This understanding came because of gaining control of fire and water, the domestication of animals, and the agricultural revolution. These developments, as mentioned, affected the language, the distribution of humans, and caused an explosion
of population. The developments created a need for new systems of government, laws, and religions to coordinate
between large groups of people that did not exist until then and of course as aforesaid influenced the spoken language, the written language, general communications, common rituals, and religions. Religions of all kinds, were in fact, the platform that enabled coordination between growing groups of people.
Other influences on the distribution of language and culture are the invention of the stone house, the invention of clay, the invention of the wheel, the invention of Metals, etc. The effects of these inventions applied to all of humanity and influenced language, religion, and the spread of humanity. The research summarized in this book, does briefly touch those points, however does not include the full material scope related to it, not even indirectly.
The knowledge acquired in the book
The book is the result of many years of research I conducted on the origins of the Hebrew language and the language in general. The said book cannot include and does not include all the information acquired and accumulated on the subject and related to the development of the language and Hebrew, but emphasizes only a few important points in a brief manner. I have endeavored to limit the content of the book to matters related to my research in the context of letters and language. The book may be of interest to speakers of Hebrew, English, German, and European Indo-European languages and other related Semitic languages. A large part of the word roots, used by the speakers of these languages are in fact derived from a proto
Semitic language, remarkably like ancient Hebrew. languages change and so does Hebrew, especially during thousands of years of time span. This ancient Proto
Hebrew or proto
Semitic will be called Hebrew
in this book. It is this language, Hebrew, that preserves the original meaning of the letters. The letters, both in Hebrew and in the Latin languages, the numbers, mythical symbols, and many mathematical symbols, are derived from this ancient Hebrew. Only through Hebrew that one can understand the roots of the other languages. For this reason, Hebrew is like a Master key
that can open many doors of understanding.
Studying the meaning of the Hebrew letters can give a better understanding of the deeper meaning of words in the Hebrew language, the Semitic languages (Arabic, Gaz, Amharic, etc.) as well as in the German and English languages and related ones. This, whether for general study, knowledge of the Bible, theology, linguistics, teaching, or perhaps just deepening the understanding of the Hebrew language, or the sources of other languages. I hope that with the help of the information in this book, it will be possible to learn through the detailed explanation and in simple and clear steps the meaning of the letters and roots in Hebrew and the various languages.
Each letter has a brief explanation regarding the pictographic meaning of the letter and its use in the ancient Hebrew roots. There are also examples of Hebrew words in which the letters appear and explanations are given about the development of the roots of the words and their meaning. I wish you an informative and pleasant experience.
A brief overview of the development of the signs- prehistory
The earliest significant signs known to us, probably stemmed from the need to count things. The first signs were discovered in Africa on sticks from animal bones (mostly monkeys), formed about 80,000 to 40,000 years ago. The signs are intended for tracking and storing information about the months and days. These were counting sticks. It is speculated that their main use was in tracking animal migration and the seasons. Also, for the purpose of calculating the lunar cycle, the appearance of the moon and sun.
Many pictographic marks have not been preserved as they were written on light and perishable materials. Before the agricultural revolution, the nomadic lifestyle did not allow carrying heavy materials, like stones. Because of this, few and rare are the ancient finds. Of the findings that have been preserved, a significant later development was discovered and this is the Danube script
also known as the Vinča script (there are other names). This writing, and a similar one, remained undeciphered and the meaning of all the signs discovered remained unclear.
Signs discovered in the northern regions around the
