#1 On May 6, 1982, George Morton was hired to fly a Learjet. He was greeted by a clear sky and pleasant temperatures as he walked to the plane. His co-pilot, a woman named Sherri Neubarth Day, had just over 1,700 hours flying time.
#2 On May 6, Morton flew a couple from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, to Orlando. The flight was expected to take about two hours, and the Teris were in Orlando in time for lunch. The plane had nearly four hours flying time with the fuel in its tank.
#3 The charter boat business’s main asset was a fishing boat named Miss Jerry, and Helmey took his daughter out on charters because she loved the sea. They were inseparable.
#4 On May 6, the Miss Jerry and Miss Judy left their berths on the Wilmington River, on the very outskirts of Savannah, and proceeded south toward the open waters. At about noon, Helmey heard a crashing sound and some strange vibration. He turned to go back to the stern so that he could lift the engine cover.

The crash site was only about sixty feet deep, but the water was murky until the divers got close to the bottom. The Learjet emerged from the muck and appeared to have gone straight down on a nose dive, and as a result the mangled debris was confined to a compact area about fifty feet wide.
