#1 I wake up around ten, make two cups of tea, and take them into the bedroom. I place one on each side of the bed. I sip thoughtfully, and in three easy stages, within fifteen, twenty minutes of waking, I am on my way.
#2 I have read books written by people who obviously love football, but that’s a different thing entirely. This is for the rest of us, and for anyone who has ever found themselves drifting off in the middle of a working day or a film or a conversation towards a left-foot volley into a top right-hand corner.

I wake up around ten, make two cups of tea, and take them into the bedroom. I place one on each side of the bed. I sip thoughtfully, and in three easy stages, within fifteen, twenty minutes of waking, I am on my way.
#2
I have read books written by people who obviously love football, but that’s a different thing entirely. This is for the rest of us, and for anyone who has ever found themselves drifting off in the middle of a working day or a film or a conversation towards a left-foot volley into a top right-hand corner.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
I fell in love with football in 1968, when I was 11 years old. I was taken to watch the FA Cup Final between West Brom and Everton, and I watched the Man Utd-Benfica game with my mother. My parents were separated in 1968, and I lived with my mother and sister.
#2
The author’s father tried to take him to the theater, but he refused every time. He was also suspicious of rugby matches, cricket matches, boat trips, and days out to Silverstone and Longleat. He didn’t want to do anything.
#3
I remember the overwhelming maleness of the crowd and the players. I could have counted twenty thousand heads from where I was sitting.
#4
I went to see Arsenal play at Highbury, and while I knew that the fans were bitter, I was surprised by how much anger and frustration was present among the fans. It was something I’d never experienced before.
#5
I have always taken the things I love, such as football, books, and records, too seriously. I have always been angry when I hear a bad record or when someone is lukewarm about a book that means a lot to me.
#6
The first and easiest friends I made at college were football fans. I was probably the smallest boy in the first year, but my size didn’t matter. The lessons were a breeze. Even the fact that I was one of only three boys wearing shorts wasn’t
