About this ebook

The reader will be hooked right from the start when the spirit of Benjamin Franklin visits Sammy requesting his assistance in a mission of national importance. But, first, they need to find Thomas Jefferson's portable writing desk. It holds the original draft of the Declaration of Independence.

The reader is introduced to 1776 Philadelphia, the people, historical sites,

inventions, and more. The author creatively intertwines fact and fiction by using dialogue that makes the reader feel like they are in the story.

This is Cheryl's fourth book in The Adventure of a Guide Dog Team series. Readers will learn more commands, why a guide dog team has to do things a certain way, and there is even a diagram showing the different parts of Sammy's harness.

The anticipation builds and you'll be anticipating where they are going next. A book that adults will enjoy too.

A conversation between Brodyn, the carriage horse, and Sammy will encourage discussions of how we are all differently abled. Brodyn feels left out because he is too big to go with the group. Sammy shares a story about Cindy growing several inches one summer, making her taller than all her friends.

The Library Company combines the old and the new, Mr. Franklin's love of books and sharing them with others. Walking through an exhibit, they discuss many of Mr. Franklin's inventions.

When they pull up to the Liberty Bell in chapter four, they gasp at the sight of John Hancock writing his flamboyant signature all over the bell… not realizing until they go inside that he is using invisible ink. Mr. Hancock then joins them on their quest.

Along their route, a spirited fire brigade clangs and races right through their carriage, which opens the discussion of the Fire Insurance Company. Mr. Franklin talks about Philosophical Hall as Brodyn slowly walks on.

At Carpenter Hall, they notice Patrick Henry. Mr. Henry greets the friends with his famous quote about being an American, then disappears. Mr. Franklin shares the importance. Calling ones self an American, rather than a Pennsylvanian, New Yorker or Virginian, solidified unification.

They travel one of the walking tours in Philadelphia which include:

The Betsy Ross House, Elfreth's Alley, Lunch at the Old City Tavern with Martha and George Washington, Dollie and James Madison, John and young John Quincy Adams and Sammy meets Mr. Washington's hound, Volcan shares a story about why he is out of favor with Mrs. Washington. Something he did at one of their dinner parties. Oops!

They find Mr. Jefferson at the Graff House, where he wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Passing the Christ church cemetery along the drive, they meet Mr. Franklin's daughter Rebecca and her son Benjamin. The reader will learn about some other founding fathers buried in the cemetery.

Thomas Jefferson is indeed at the Graff house, working. He explains his concern after he witnessed some shady characters looming around the museum display.

The spirits and friends devise a plan to scare the pants off the boys so they never think of stealing again.

The reader will laugh out loud while learning some historical facts. They are sure to want to learn more about guide dog teams and Philadelphia and our Declaration of Independence.

Thank you to the museums who provided photos and much history.

History Mystery in Philadelphia - Cheryl McNeil Fisher

    Chapter One

    Sammy’s Dream

Scratching my pillow bed, I fluff it up then circle twice and Ahh, perfect. I put my head on my paws and close my eyes.

    Sammy, a voice called out.

Startled, I lift my head. "What? Who’s there? I look around. I don’t see anyone, so I settle my head back down.

    Sammy my boy.

I snap my head back up. A man is drifting toward me. Drifting? I shake my head, confused at what I see. Yep, drifting.

He is dressed differently than other guys I know. He has on a pointed hat and his hair is as white as his pants.

My name is Benjamin Franklin. Sammy, I need your help.

Benjamin Franklin? I’ve heard stories about you. Didn’t you live a long time ago? How are you here?

Benjamin Franklin is leaning over Sammy in his doggie bed, tlking with him.

(Caption shows Benjamin Franklin bent over talking to Sammy.)

"I’m one of the spirits of 1776.

A spirit? Wait, I must be dreaming. A spirit? Really?

"Yes Sammy. Many people know that spirits from 1776 hang out in

historic Philadelphia, says Benjamin Franklin. We like to reminisce and make sure that people don’t forget the important facts about our country."

You need my help? How can I help you?

Cindy and her friend Kelly, plan to visit Historic Philadelphia tomorrow. I need you to help them find a very important piece of history so that it doesn’t get into the wrong hands.

Okay, what do you want us to find?

I need you to find Thomas Jefferson’s writing desk.

    A desk?

Yes Sammy, but first thing I need you to do is to find my key. It is the key that I had tied to my kite when I discovered electricity. The key opens the secret drawer in Thomas Jefferson’s portable writing desk. I lost it in the old post office.

How will I get them to do this? I am just a dog.

Yes, but you’re a guide dog. As they discover clues, you will guide Cindy and her friends around the city. It will be your job to guide them to the historic sites in search of the desk.

Huh? I’m not a tour guide. I am a guide dog. I guide my Cindy because she doesn’t see things very well and I keep her safe.

Mr. Franklin smiles broadly and says, Yes, of course you are a guide dog. You will safely guide Cindy through Historic Philadelphia in search of Thomas Jefferson’s desk.

I tilted my head in curiosity. Are you funning with me?

Not at all my boy. I am asking you to use your guide skills to help the girls to first find my key and then Thomas Jefferson’s desk. You are extremely smart Sammy. That is why you have your job. Not just any dog can be a guide dog."

I put my head up higher. That’s right. My momma had eight puppies.

I have three brothers and four sisters Only five of us made it into the puppy training program. Two of my sisters and one brother were adopted by some loving families.

The rest of us went to separate homes to be raised and trained to become guide dogs. When we were all a year and a half, we had a special test. Two of my brothers didn’t pass the test that would allow them into the next stage of training. My brother Sanka is a search and rescue dog and Sarge has a job sniffing for drugs at airports. Sasha is a guide dog in Virginia and Star is a guide dog in North Carolina.

Exactly why I came to you Sammy. I have watched you these past few days as you were sightseeing with Cindy. You can do this Sammy. I believe in you. We need to find that desk and the document inside. It is the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, which was written by Thomas Jefferson. It is vital to our United States of America.

Yes sir. I will do my best. But, how will I convince Cindy of our goal?"

Don’t worry my boy, I plan to visit Cindy next. I will tell her about your mission.

I yawn, O… kay. Sounds good. See you tomorrow. My eyelids feel so heavy. I smile and fall into a deep slumber, but not before thinking, I must be dreaming.

    Chapter Two

    Morning Excitement

In the morning I opened my eyes and wonder, did I really just have a dream about Benjamin Franklin? Either something was in my kibble last night or maybe I really did talk with a real live ghost. Oh wait, that sounds silly. Ghosts aren’t alive. Well, first things first. I stretched my hind legs out as far as they would go. I rolled on my back and stretched all four legs up... up to the ceiling. Ahh… that feels good. If it turns out that Benjamin Franklin really needs our help, then we are going to have a fun adventure day!

I jump up and trot over to Cindy’s bed and reach up to give her a lick.

Good morning Sammy, Cindy says while reaching out to pet me.

I had a strange dream last night. One that involved Benjamin Franklin. Strange huh?

    I licked her hand.

In the dream, he asked me to help him find his key and ultimately find Thomas Jefferson’s writing desk. He said that he would visit you, Kelly, Mulligan and Mulligan’s horse Brodyn too! Did he visit you?

I jump onto the bed and plop down next to her.

Cindy hugs me tight and says, "Guess that is a yes.

I give a lick and nuzzle her hand in agreement.

Why don’t you go down to the kitchen to see Kelly? I smell coffee, so I know she is up.

I nuzzle her cheek, then I jump off the bed. Before heading for the door, I turn and look back at my Cindy.

I’m good Sammy. I’ll use my cane to come down.

I don’t guide Cindy when we are in our house. We are staying
