Dog Body Language (Dog Language) - Roland Berger

    Introductory

There are many reasons to want to better understand the language of dogs. Especially when a dog's behavior is perceived as problematic, it is often due to the natural language barrier between dog and human. Humans express themselves primarily through verbal language. Body language, gestures and facial expressions, and even tone of voice play a role, but they are only complementary. Many people forget this. A person cannot not communicate. A person who is uncomfortable can see that without having to say it. Dogs, on the other hand, communicate almost exclusively through their body language. This quickly leads to misunderstandings, from which the relationship between dogs and their owners can suffer. Humans are just not a real dog pack substitute. And so we classify dogs that do not behave according to our norm as problematic, antisocial or dangerous. The dog wants to understand what his owner tells him, this requires the necessary knowledge about the nature of the four-legged friend on the part of the human.

But not only when a dog causes problems, it is worthwhile to look into the inner life of these wonderful animals in more detail. Dogs are complex creatures with a great variety of feelings, which they definitely express. As with us humans, it is important for dogs to understand and respond to the signals they send. Gaining a greater knowledge of the dog's psyche is a fundamental prerequisite for being able to give your dog a fulfilling life.

It is also advisable to take preventive action against undesirable behavior and prevent it from occurring in the first place. This guide will help you to realize that some dog behavior is a man-made problem and not so much a problem of the four-legged friend. Once an undesirable behavior has been learned, it is much more difficult for dogs to get rid of it, and this can only be achieved through proper handling and a lot of patience through practice sessions. It is also demonstrably more difficult for humans to cognitively restructure something that has already been learned.

In addition, anyone who works professionally with dogs, for example as a dog trainer, should have a sound knowledge of the forms of communication of these animals and be able to apply it. For practical application, theoretical knowledge always forms the basis. Therefore, if you turn to a dog professional because you need support in handling, pay attention to whether and how the trainer has been trained.

Whatever your personal reason for wanting to study dog language in more detail, it will definitely be worth it!

Insight into the research of dog psychology

Unlike human psychology, which deals with the experience and behavior of humans, canine psychology is not a recognized field of study at universities. However, it is possible to study canine psychology outside of a university and become professionally involved with the experience and behavior of dogs. There are some professions that are based on state-certified degrees, such as dog trainer. Schools that offer distance learning programs give people who are professionally involved with dogs a way to further their education accordingly. For example, a person who wants to open a dog boarding or grooming facility should study dog psychology in depth. These courses are not comparable to university studies, even if they have state-certified certificates.

Here it plays a big role to recognize possible behavioral problems of the dog and to always work out improvement possibilities adapted to the respective dog. Knowledge of the animal instincts and forms of communication of the dog are indispensable. Dog psychology is about understanding the dog's thoughts and actions better and being able to apply this understanding successfully in communication with the dog. Not only does a deeper understanding of the inner life of dogs help in analysis, but also in the application of various training methods, such as conditioning, through which certain behavior patterns can be learned or discarded. What people quickly see as misbehavior on the part of the dog is in fact in most cases the result of failed communication between man and dog. In the second place is the different understanding of how the dog may be integrated into the human pack. In the case of a misbehavior does not necessarily have to be a mistake on the part of the dog. For example territorial behavior at the garden fence or food envy belong to a normal basic communication of every dog. If the dog barks at strangers at the fence or growls at the child when it pulls its fur, some people experience this behavior as disturbing and conclude that the dog is behaving incorrectly. However, it is not the dog's behavior that is the real problem, but the human's expectations.

The reason for this is the fact that dogs and humans communicate in very different ways. We humans express ourselves primarily linguistically and can make differentiated statements about our inner lives and needs with our words - in addition to nonverbal communication. Humans often neglect body language and it is rarely used consciously to make certain statements. It is different with dogs, who communicate almost exclusively through body language. Verbal expressions do occur, but they play a subordinate role. So it is up to us humans to adapt to this. One of the most common mistakes in dog training is to humanize the dog. Humans use their communication to adapt the dog to the human pack. However, very few people do this consciously. They simply do not know any better. And if they have knowledge that their dog does not understand a word when told how the day has been, they ignore this knowledge. Even if they are aware that dogs do not understand our language, it happens again and again. So the four-legged friend is asked whether he wants to stay outside the door or come into the house. He is pressed and cuddled like a child or a cuddly toy and some dogs are allowed to sit on a chair at the table during meals. This is when they are told how good or bad the day has been. If you interact with a dog, it will instinctively pay attention to your body language and tone of voice, but will not be able to gather any information from the spoken words themselves. The basis for successful communication is therefore the successful use of signals that are understandable to the dog. Learning and implementing this requires a lot of experience in direct contact with the animal.

Consequently, most of the experience in this field is practical. Dog psychologists usually represent individual points of view based on their personal experiences. So, when dealing with this subject, they should include as many different educational materials as possible and form their own points of view from them. Studying the psychology of dogs will help you better understand your four-legged friends and avoid misunderstandings when dealing with them. For professional dog trainers, these skills are essential and it is worthwhile to expand them, even beyond the basic training. However, every dog owner should also have a certain understanding of his four-legged friend in order to enable both the dog and himself to live together comfortably.

    A therapist for the dog

Dog psychology in the strictest sense does not exist as a field of study or training, as already explained. Dog psychology is a sub-area of some professional groups, such as the dog psychologist. Thereby, those therapists have to complete different training and further education in order to receive clients and their four-legged patients in their own practice. The profession of therapist is in demand, not only for us humans. Dogs are for quite a lot of people an important part of the family, for which they also go to the dog therapist. This person has, for example, training as a trainer, animal healer and has expertise in animal homeopathy. People who professionally come into contact with the dog's psyche, support owners with behavioral problems or insecurities with handling - whereby
